Is Flemish different enough from Dutch to be it's own language or is it basically just an accent/dialect?

there's different shades but generally it's not that different, basically a dialect

Just dialect. There's MUCH bigger differences within Flemish dialects than between official BE and NL Dutch. Same is probably true for the dialects within the Netherlands.

Dialect. In fact it's closer to standard Dutch than various mainland Dutch dialects. Still that's "standard" Flemish, Flemish itself has dialects too. Can't find that chart that actually rated them on intelligibility, but it can get even sillier with local villages in the same dialect group varying wildly in some aspects like pronunciation, grammar or even vocabulary for the same words when they are about 20 km apart.

I found it, higher # is farther away from Standard Dutch. It's not as comprehensive as I'd like, but it gets the idea across. Doesn't seem to take into account any edge cases like the fishermen's villages, but assume those are around ~15-22 depending on the age of the speaker if they actually still speak their dialect.

so some Flemish dialects and the language in Maastricht are more different from Standard Dutch than Afrikaans?? wild if true

Those SE areas are far more Franconian than the rest of the country and Kerkrade's dialect is actually part of Ripuarian which is a decidedly German dialect group. Afrikaans has a large basis in older versions of relatively intelligible Dutch dialects and English, things that both quite intelligible to most Dutch people.

Still dialect maps aren't perfect. There's a West-Veluws dialect that uses some out of place Frankish pronunciations and is entirely surrounded by areas that haven't done so for many centuries.

What does English sound like to Dutch people? When I hear Dutch spoken it kinda almost sounds like an Irish or American accent at first. I can understand the odd few words.
It's almost like an American speaking German with more guttural sounds and English grammar.

The problem is that most of the people alive here actually know English (enough in case of the older generation) so it's hard to make that judgement. Your grammar is similar, but you have far too many non-germanic loanwords. My old man can't make heads or tails of English and very little actually registers when something like German or some Scandinavian languages do have some familiarity to him to the point where it's much easier for him to pick a few things out. That's literally just the 1 person I can ask though.
