Transfermarkt is based, except for three things
    >winning penalties counts as an assist
    >market values are pure fanfiction
    >transfer fees don't include add-ons

that's pretty major flaws, especially the 2nd one, and the 1st one is just ridiculous
still, not all market values on TM are bullshit

        >still, not all market values on TM are bullshit
And a broken clock is right twice a day. Even if they're using some sort of algorithm to determine an "objective" transfer fee, it's a stupid concept because a fee is solely determined by whatever the buying and selling club agree upon. For example, if a PL club decides to buy a player, the selling club will hike up the price by 50% just because they know Chelsea and Man U are stupid enough to pay it. Plus they place far too much emphasis on a player's age, a 21 year old prospect will have a higher market value than a 25 year old entering his prime or a proven 28 year old.

      > winning penalties counts as an assist
Hm that doesn’t feel right, do you mean they literally give a player an assist for winning a pen? Or does it go into their own expected stats. I feel like there has to be a standard

There is a standard (winning penalties doesn't count as an assist), but for some baffling reason Transfermarkt decide to ignore it.

That seems ridiculous lmao, but i understand their desire to try and quantify it somehow, because winning a pen does result in a goal like 75% of the time.

That's what stats like xG were invented for. Just comparing goals between strikers is a flawed metric because a certain striker might be playing in a team that feeds him while another striker hardly gets any delivery. xG would allow you to compare the quality of shots and allow you to start quantifying how clinical a striker is. But the key thing to note about these stats is that they are measured separately, they don't try to arbitrarily change an established metric just because of some ideological differences.

Ok unrelated but I have two questions about xG. If a player outperforms their xG does that mean they got “lucky” or does it mean they’re skilled? And also, is it possible for a player to outperform their xG over the course of their career, or does xG and G even out if you increase the sample

            >If a player outperforms their xG does that mean they got “lucky” or does it mean they’re skilled?
Over the course of a single match, they might just be lucky. Over the course of an entire season, or their entire career, they're probably pretty clinical.

            >And also, is it possible for a player to outperform their xG over the course of their career, or does xG and G even out if you increase the sample
It is possible for good players to overperform, after all xG is modelled on every single shot ever so it doesn't take into account the quality of the striker and top strikers are generally expected finish a chance more often than the average player. Although the gap between a player's overall goal tally and xG isn't as large as you might expect, especially as you increase the sample size since it will generally iron out any peaks or troughs in form that a player might go through throughout their career.
