Just call it the "Super League".

Honestly never understood why the expanded the competition to include more non-champions from rich leagues and change it to specifically refer to a league of champions. Super League (or just keeping the old name) makes more sense.

the old name was european champions cup, they just called it european cup for short

Nobody cares about the UCL now it's an actual league.

Real Madrid won La Liga in 07/08, therefore Barca's 08/09 UCL win was illegitimate.

        Damn alright

How about the CL winner must beat the winners of other european leagues from round of 16 all the way to final? there must be a few

bullshit argument because non-winners admittance wasn't the only change. these winners didn't win on the same cup terms as previous winners. it used to be an invitational cup, it's becoming an invitational cup again in disguise. basically mickey mouse in a nice dress. by banning english teams in the 80s they favored smaller leagues only in the short run, but after some time that created bigger disparities in the one team farmers' leagues. so nowadays the old format wouldn't make any sense because they broke the balance already and made it so that CL favours less competitive leagues/league seasons.

Just because some earlier UCLs were also illegitimate for different reasons, it doesn't disprove the point that the current format is also a meme.

There is no format that would not make it a meme
        >League Winners' Cup
enjoy Real vs Legia and Man City vs FC Basel in quaterfinals
        >Current format
4th place Spanish team gets a free pass, while a champion from smaller country has to play 3 games just to smell the money
        >New format
le heckin over 9000 group games!!! how exciting

The only way to save football would be either a civil war in england and spain or borderline communist revenue sharing and periodic culling of oil money clubs

nothing wrong, unless you'd want your competition to have a high level and not be just seal clubbing of teams from baltic states. if that would not make it a meme competition than nothing would. i have a feeling you are 20 years old max

It's actually the opposite. Wanting le big plastic teams to play each other every week for le hecking excitement is something that only an ADHD zoomer brain would enjoy. Anyone above a certain age would actually want the sanctity and prestige of the competition to be respected.

Single leg, straight knockout. None of this group stage and second leg bollocks to protect the glamour clubs from embarrassment.

        exactly what polandball said although

i agree. for me, right now, the problem is the equilibrium got fricked and teams like Juve, Bayern, Psg, Real, and Barca could form a stable domestic hegemony and were the frontrunners in many recent CL seasons and build their brand on that. They could afford giving CL the priority, because they knew their UCL spot was never in danger and thus make CL runs a routine. I just wanted to point out this would not change by reverting to the old rule of only champions applying, because most of those teams usually win (or used to) their leagues.
And i also wanted to say now that most of the rules changed, we can't retroactively assign more weight to double champions.
Anyhow, the importance of CL weakens domestic leagues, as we see from the OP chart, it's only got teams who "killed" their leagues + mourinho magic.

No no,nice try though. CL only counts if you win the CL AND the league in the same season, how could a club be the best in Europe if it's not the best in its own country

Surely it’s also legitimate if you won the CL the year before and you defend it a la Forest

      Anonymous

Only if the previous CL was legitimate. So Forest in 1979/80 is legit, Real Madrid in 2016/17 is not legit.

No, you need the 4 teams from big countries to keep the league more competitive.
