Can Euros help an American understand

What is a champion league? I don't get it. Like Real Madrid and Manchester City are in the same league or is one in a UK league and one is in a Spanish league? And is its called Manchester City or is the city just called Manchester. What about Wolverhapton, Liverpool, Brentford, ect. None of it makes sense. Are they all the same league? Like college sports here we have different conferences but they all play at the same level. Why play friendies is another question. Does the French have a team and why the US and South America not invited?

It is a tournament where the best placed teams of the last year in the European leagues compete against each other.
In South America we have the Libertadores.

      Why do Americans don't?
Oasis is the best band in the 90s and it's not even close.
Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in Anger are some of the best rock songs ever.

Don't look back in Anger is a banger but Wonderwall and Supernova was too over played on the radio here.

yes every european country is a conference
regular season winner gets the country level award
and each conference gets to send x number of teams to the main tournament depending on it's past performance

So this was actually a pretty big event. It's like sending your leagues best teams to the regionals like in college sports. Well that's pretty cool. Do people root for the team from the city they grew up?

Normal people do. Soulless thirdies don't.

half of spain supports real madrid cause they don't even hand out the broadcast revenue on equal terms
There's no salary caps so there's a lot more bandwagoning in general

It's the playoffs for teams that placed high in their leagues last season, played at the same time as the current season. It's pretty dumb.

In footie, geographical tournaments are common. So you will see state leagues, regional cups, national leagues/cups, and continental cups. Almost every country has some variant of those.

The Premier League is a National/Domestic league. The teams who do well in the national league, qualify to next season's continental league, in Europe's case: Champions League.

Imagine if the best teams from the NBA had to play against the best teams from the Mexican Basketball league and the Canadian Basketball league, more or less like that.

The 'Champions League' is a cashgrab that grew out of the European Cup, whereby the actual Champions of European countries would play a knockout cup competition against each other. This perfectly sound principle went to frick when they started letting any old team in it and Liverpool would win the 'Champions League' despite having finished fifth, and shit teams like Spurs would feature, for no apparent. Oasis are (and remain) popular because they are good songs to sing when drunk. Brits like singing when they are drunk.

In the 1950s, a competition called the European Cup was created, where the champions of each European country would face each other to decide the best team in Europe. In 1993 they changed the name to the Champions League. Then they realized that the second best team from England, Spain, Italy, etc. were actually better than the champions of Luxembourg or Estonia, so they stopped inviting only champions.

      >Then they realized that the second best team from England, Spain, Italy, etc. were actually better than the champions of Luxembourg or Estonia
You meant to say 'richer', not better. And it's now down to the '1st to 5th best team, if country rich', etc

It is exactly like Avengers. The best soccer teams in Europe get together to beat the final boss: Real Vardrid.
