Can someone explain what the point of this is?

Can someone explain what the point of this is? We already have the Champion's League to determine who is the best team in Europe.

Is this to find out who the best team is out of the shitty CL rejects? Literally who watches this and why?

This and the even more moronic Europa Conference League, which apparently is the THIRD tier of this shitty competition of shitters

sports are about culture and fun and trying to win. The CL is impossible for non "super" clubs to win because of the money aspect. The EL and ECL are actually winnable for SOVL anti-plastic clubs like Athletic Club.

CL used to be for local league champions only, while EL used to be for local cup winners only (used to be called Cup Winners Cup). CL slowly started giving more spots to the bigger countries, and eventually EL got CL rejects and also teams that are ranked below CL spots in local leagues.
Conference league is moronic indeed, they have teams there that gain nothing other than extra fatigue and more travel expenses.

The EL is less rigged on average and thus more enjoyable to watch. The conference league is a meme tournament and thus it's fun to see meme teams play each off, you often find more passion on the teams playing because 1)They need the money and 2)It's still a continental trophy.

  20. 3 weeks ago

The lower you go, from CL to EL to Conference League (I hate that this is technically also CL), the less predictable it is. EL actually is kind of the golden middle between "always the same big clubs rigging their way" and "nobody cares, it's shitters". EL always has multiple cool clubs with good following, the games are less predictable and still high in quality. Conference League kind of suffers from being a new thing that's even lower and obviously was made to relieve stress from the EL, but it as well has its perks.
Likewise, in Germany for example, the 2nd league has been more attractive than the Bundesliga for years now. Until this season, you knew Bayern would win the title in the Bundesliga, and you knew Dortmund, Leverkusen, and Leipzig would finish 2nd to 4th. In the 2nd league however, you still had good players - and plenty of clubs people cared about. No boring plastic clubs like Wolfsburg and Hoffenheim. Likewise, you don't have to endure City and PSG in the EL

Multiple reasons. The only con really is how ""pointless"" it is like you said, since you already know which team is the best in the continent. But the main problems of having only 1 tier of continental competition (CC) is that you bring inbalance to the domestic leagues (DL). If every year only the top 2 teams from a DL play in the CC, they will play against better teams more often, in a more prestigious competition, broadening the range of their brand, motivating their fans, and slowly, every year, they will get farther and farther from that third best team in their league both in reach, in money and eventually in talent output and structure. You don't want that. So a way to combat it, is to give those 3rd and 4th best teams a CC as well. They might not make as much money as 1st and 2nd, but every year they will do just a bit less, and the different will never get as big as it would with only 1 tier.

Think of the NBA and its divisions, now think, what if the teams only played against their division rivals and only the top team got to play in the playoffs. Every year that team would get a little edge for playing against better and diverse competition, making more money, etc.

Another reason is a bit more personal. Little Johnny would rather see his team win the 2nd tier CC once than see his team finish 3rd ten years in a row. A 15yo 100% British blondie lady named Shaniqwa Taylor might have never fallen in love with footie in her life, but randomly watching a finals game with her family where their club won their first trophy in 50 years changed her life. It doesn't matter if it wasn't the top trophy in the continent, it is better than nothing. In life we need downs, little challenges that motivate us, but we also need ups, we need confirmation that we are going in the right direction. And that also works for the collective - your family, your company, your club, your country, etc.

Of course, Conference League might seen much to you, but it works because Europe has a lot of countries, a lot of good leagues and a lot of good teams. South America for example barely has enough teams on the same level for a competitive 2nd tier (Sudamericana). You mentioned Concacaf tried it here

America and Mexico actually tried this for the last couple years of the SuperLiga
It lasted two years and then fan disinterest killed it

, but Concacaf doesn't have enough talent. The MLS and LMX are years ahead everyone else, the top LMX teams are better than the top MLS teams but the average MLS team is better than the average LMX team, and everyone else is far below both. You can't sustain a second, let alone a third tier competition with that level of inbalance.

I don't mean to sound rude or anything, but I think some Americans can't understand it because your leagues are setup for maximum entertainment, not competition, and you only have one level above everything else, but that's not how it work anywhere else. Maybe try to follow a consistent Europa league team for a couple of years and when they eventually win it you might understand.

        Anonymous

Ah yes, I forgot to address one point: Predictability. The top tier is where money is at, so the richer teams will get better and eventually they will it 9 times out 10. Since the Europa League teams change every year and you can't really win two UEL in a row (since you get "promoted" to the UCL in the next year) you can't really predict it. As some anons have said, it's almost the perfect blend of quality and balance, like the UCL used to be in the past.

FCS is entirely a lower level, you're FBS or FCS based on what league you play in, not your performance in that league. There's also Division 2 and Division 3 below FCS (both FBS and FCS are NCAA-Division 1, and its only split into subdivisions for football).

There is, however, something very similar in college basketball. Its called the NIT, its a secondary tournament contested by teams who don't make the NCAA Tournament.
