MMA, in both the east and the west, was pioneered heavily by pro wrestlers. I know Fhite likes to refer to the old, broken carnies as fake tough guys, and plenty were, but a lot of wrestlers were shoot tough guys, even if they'd get mauled nowadays. But that's due to the evolution of combat sports more than anything.

This is total fricking horseshit LMAO
I mean, MAYBE in Japan I guess. Even then it was 'pioneered' by people who were sick of fake fricking pro wrestling.

Inoki vs Ali was the first professional MMA match.

Boring as frick too - Inoki just laid on the ground and kicked at Ali's legs most of the time

            Anonymous

That's because Ali was a b***h and knew he'd get beat after he saw Inoki training. He had the rules changed very soon before the fight so that Inoki could only kick while on the ground and could only grapple if Ali was down.

Ali was just a boxer, frick he knew about anything else? There was no way he'd lose in a standup game

All the more proof that MMA fricking sucked when it was brand new and that nobody knew how to develop it, except the best of the best in professional wrestling.

            >There was no way he'd lose in a standup game
Probably not, which was even more moronic since Inoki would've definitely tried to stand and land kicks in the mix-up if it was allowed. And both MMA and kickboxing have taught us that punching is overall more effective when striking.

            >Ali had the rules changed
you mean Ali's trainer had the rules changed because even though everyone knew it was going to be some goofy fake Thunderlips vs. Rocky style promotional, Ali's trainer started to get suspicious about Inoki trying to make a name for himself internationally by wrestling him or going after his legs (he was right)

The reaction of the entire sports world was that Ali got ambushed by some huckster that was trying to use a friendly exhibition as a means of carnie self-promotion. Every sportswriter in the world shat on Inoki for it, as did every pro wrestler in the world at the time (pic related).

It's only become fetishized later by Inoki-worshiping morons who were dumb enough to believe the fiction that a guy who never had a shoot fight was the father of MMA. Sure, it was Inoki, not guys like Fujiwara or Maeda or Takada, not even Frank Gotch. Gimme a break.

            Anonymous

Not that I doubt you but friendly or not, surely it was set up for Inoki to wrestle Ali? It wasn't a boxing match so Inoki had to specialize in his area of kicks and/or grappling. Feels more like the sporting world didn't want their sacred cow in Ali to get beat by some Jap wrestler.

Me and Inoki had a falling out with Rikidozan and the JWA boys -- you wouldn't want to mess with them, dude -- anyway, Giant Baba offered me a billion of those Japanese yen brother to go with AJPW but I said, "No thanks, Jack."
