Because he is also at bat, they run between the wicket and take turns batting, unless they hit a 4 or a 6. It's like baseball but if you continued batting at each base.

a fast bowler will sprint in 30 yards to deliver a "pitch" at least 6 times in a row, then go to the boundary for a "break" where they will sprint to recover any ball that goes within the possible quarter of the field they are protecting, before coming back for another 6 pitches
they usually do this for half a dozen overs, multiple times throughout the day
when they are not bowling, the batsmen switch ends after every over and the fielders also need to switch ends, which can mean that bowler, when not fielding balls, is also running from one end of a 150 yard stadium to the other every 6 deliveries

compare that to a baseball outfielder who walks to the outfield, maybe fields one ball while the pitcher strikes out the batters and then sits on his ass for another 15 minutes before doing it over 9 times

            Anonymous

            Outfielders are pussies

            >aaaahhhh please give me my special safe pillow glove so I can catch the ball (that's lighter than a standard female cricket ball) without it hurting my soft hands

Pain endurance doesn't make for an interesting sport

a test match day has 2 official breaks (lunch and "tea")) and the rest are 2 hour blocks of play with 2 short drink breaks in those sessions
a 1 day match has a single break at the changeover of innings and a few short drink breaks

the batsmen usually have fielding positions that don't have to run as much but then they might spend the next 2 days out there batting before being in the field again
and they also have to switch positions every over so are at least travelling the length of the pitch every 6 balls
