The Ottomans were in full decline by this point. They joined WW1 with the intention of recapturing their past glory, and failed so spectacularly that they destroyed themselves completely. Then they blamed the Armenians for all of it, rounded them up, and allegedly had themselves a little genocide.

In 1900 Serbia had its state for a century.
British and French kept Ottoman Empire artificially alive for a whole century to counter Russian expansionism into Balkans, until Balkan countries gained strength to kick them themselves. That period both Austria and Russia competed to control Serbian kings

European media have a bizarre obsession with Yugoslavia. Never in my life have I seen the article 'imagine a team of the Soviet Union'. The funniest thing is that Croatia surpassed the biggest Yugo success on its debut in '98. But after the 2018 World Cup, I thought 'now it's over, Croatia has entered the finals of the World Cup and there is no logic behind the newspaper headlines 'this Yugo team could play in the finals!'" How naive I was.

That's not the point. For a long time, I wondered why everyone was against Croatian independence and why the 'international community' was holding us back for so long in everything. Then I understood. Yugoslavia was the realization of wet dreams about a multi-cultural utopia that was adored by liberals, greens and socialists, i.e. all those 'pro-European elites'. It was a country with 6 republics, 5 nations, 4 languages, 3 religions, 2 alphabets and one Tito who held it all together as a legendary leader from ww2 who created the ideology of socialism with a human face, unlike the infamous gulag archipelago ( of Russia) whom everyone hated as much as they feared - that's why no one writes articles about what the Soviet NT would look like today. This complete illusion about the possibility of a multi-cultural utopia exploded in their faces because it turned out that even people who speak similar languages and have almost the same genes simply cannot live together in one country. Of course, 'nationalism' and 'religion' were blamed for the collapse of that country, not the crazy idea of putting different nations with different interests in the same room. Independent Croatia or even Serbia remind them day by day of the fact that nationalism (that is, common sense) will always win over theory, our very existence has devalued their ideological dream because it has been proven in practice that what they want is simply impossible.

Tf did I just read? Mate, nobody obsesses over Yugoslavia, other than maybe a few fringe political scientists. You're attacking a complete strawman. Yugoslavia is about as relevant to modern, European political discourse as the Holy Roman Empire. Also, have you been living under a rock for the past couple of years? The legacy of the Soviet Union still casts a vast shadow over much of Europe, with the war in Ukraine being the most pertinent example. Please log off and go outside once in a while. I think you've taken the "Man, imagine how good their football team would be!" memes too seriously. That's all they are. Memes.

The Holy Roman Empire was the main inspiration for the Balfour Declaration as David Lloyd George and other British Politicians saw Germany as easily pulled apart due to it's ethnic and social diversity. So it very much has complete significance over the current political situation

I think a lot of people like Yugoslavia because we all hate our lives here, and we want a communist alternative that isn’t a shithole. Only Yugoslavia really fits that bill. And I know Croatianon said they all hated each other, but I can fix them. English people and Scottish people can live together. Belgians get along with each other when it really comes down to it and they’re sick of 500 days without a government. The Spanish don’t kill each other. It’s easy to live in harmony with other groups if your country isn’t full of hooting animals.

Croatia wanted a peaceful separation or even a confederation, but the Serbs sent an army to Croatia. Where exactly is our bloodlust?

Imagine 2018 Croatia with Handanovic. You would have been world champions.
Imagine Spain without Catalunia in 2008-12, they would have zero titles.
Sometimes a bigger population DOES help.

Subasic is an excellent goalkeeper, but Dalic is to blame because he still put him in the starting 11 in the final when he was injured. On the other hand, who will put a reserve goalkeeper to defend in the final? It's a tough decision. But my point is that I would rather be forever second and third under the name of Croatia than world champions under the name of Austria-Hungary or Yugoslavia.

Russia would be significantly better on paper, but the question is chemistry. Russians and Ukrainians could still work, but Poles? Austria(-Hungary) is an even better example, they’d be elite on paper, but Austrians, Hungarians, Czechs, Croatians forming a single team? It would lack cohesion. Also, Austria and Hungary would probably play separately - and even, you‘d have Austrians and Czechs in one team and Hungarians and Croatians, which is even worse.
Germany wouldn’t change that much, most people from the eastern areas fled to the west. A few Poles and the Elsass would not make much of a difference for today’s generation. There were a few players in the past where this mattered, though
Turkey/Ottoman Empire would be interesting, but they‘d still lack individual quality on paper, and cohesion would suck even more

If it wasn't for the war communism would have been far less likely to take off and if it still did in Russia then Eastern Europe is probably more resistant to it.
If there's no communism in Hungary then there's no Kubala, Puskas, Kocsis, Czibor fleeing to Spain. They'd have a better chance of growing a lasting football culture anyway.

and again... AH NT did not exist, AH never had one national team, but Austria, Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia had their own NT.

The unpleasant answer is you aren't considered real countries by people who make that remark.
Russia is considered real, but they aren't keeping track of every little republic that pops up north of Greece

It is possible that this is the case, but in any case it is a diagnosis. Yugo NT is the most overrated team of all time. Pele (and Scolari, relatively recently) said that only Yugoslavia played football the way Brazil does, and that's why he invited Yugo NT to his farewell match. His jersey from that match is in Croatia. But Yugoslavia's best result in 40 years was only one 4th place. So I really can't understand the fetishization of yugo football.
