It’s easier to criticize Rock lore than Austin and Hogan because he’s kept himself around in both the wrestling and mainstream public eye for far longer but Rock is easily in the GOAT discussion as much as Austin is. The two of them carried pro wrestling at its height on their backs.

  6. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

I don't think pro wrestling can have a GOAT by the nature of it not being an athletic competition. GOAT is already thrown around too easily nowadays when it should be reserved for very special individuals like Wayne Gretsky or Michael Jordan or Babe Ruth. These are men who literally changed not only the public's perspective of their respective sport, but the actual sport itself. Men who's records will only be broken by the sport changing its own rules to better facilitate copycats of said men.

      Anonymous

So Bruno and Hogan are the goats?

        Anonymous

I think they may come closest but I really don't think I'd classify either as a GOAT again because pro wrestling isn't an athletic competition so much as an athletic performance. For a comparison to sports greats, Bruno was the Babe Ruth to Hogan's Mark McGwire. Also a major issue I have to the concept of GOATs even in sports is that comparing and contrasting athletes across different eras is incredibly difficult. Babe Ruth made baseball into "America's Favorite Pastime." Michael Jordan made the NBA a global league. Wayne Gretsky got hockey on TV outside Canada. Tony Hawk made skateboards a household item, and skateboarding into an olympic sport. All of this while competing athletically against the other best athletes of their time.
Gun to my head? I'd say Bruno is probably the closest wrestling has to a GOAT, but I wouldn't call him a GOAT.

You can throw Hakuho in there as well. Guy just retired but he was basically sumo Babe Ruth. I doubt anyone will equal his achievements in a hundred years.

The cool thing about sumo is that the records go back like 200 years, longer than any other sport. And Hakuho holds basically all of the important records, by a lot.

Still don't think you could say he has clearly surpassed Hogan (who had the most important heel run in the history of modern wrestling) or Austin (who had to retire early and was the top guy when Raw was being watched by 8 million people an episode) but he's in the conversation.

        Anonymous

It depends on what you qualify as surpassed. All 3 guys had their strengths and they had things the other 2 did better. But if we measure the absolute peaks of all 3’s star power and popularity The Rock blew past the both of them in that regard. Rock in every sense of the word is the single biggest mega star the business has ever produced. He’s the only wrestler that got bigger than the business itself.

It's just recency bias. When you've become accustomed to dogshit product for so long, someone whose not shit coming back makes him seem like the second coming of Christ. The AE and Ruthless Agression Era had the same Rock there every single night, along with Austin, and Hogan, and HHH, and Flair, etc. How long can they realistically keep milking these past stars though?

  20. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Pretty sure WWE/F GOAT is interchangeably Rock, Austin or Hogan depending on what you value the most. But all 3 of them are alone at the mountaintop as far as I’m concerned. I will say that as someone said before, Rock is the only one who “retired” in 2004 and then came back so often and so much since 2011 and done the kind of work that he has. Especially now. We all make the assumption that Austin and Hogan would be top in any era and they probably would but Rock is the only one literally proving it. Dude is 51 years old. And old guy to most people whose main body of his career has kind of already been over and he’s the best worker in the company right now over the top babyface and heel while showing up almost every week.

More longevity tbh. Goldberg was an absolute mega star at his peak but Rock, Austin, and especially Hogan were mega stars for longer. Also they could all talk which is something Goldberg wasn't particularly good at.

They were on top in the WWF surrounded by other top talent that made them look even better than they were.

Goldberg was a WCW gimmick. People still talk about him, but nobody talks about any great matches or angles he did because none of it was memorable. Because WCW was always a secondary promotion even when Nitro was beating RAW in the ratings.

Rocky has been underrated by smarks his whole career. Even back in 2000 people online were talking about him being boring, overrated and not good in the ring. Which is complete nonsense, Rock was an excellent wrestler in his prime. Didn't have flashy technical matches but he was smooth as frick and made everything look good. Promo wise he was never just a catchphrase machine, sure he did that a lot because he was good at it and it was over, not because that was his limit. He was cutting fast-talking and intelligent promos ever since his heel turn in 97 before he started filling his promos with catchphrases.
