Frankly I'm proud of them, good job Japan.

WTF, who played for the US? A bunch of 13-year-olds? As if your average high school team wouldn't absolutely maul the best Japan has to offer (minus Japanese Americans perhaps, but I can't imagine them being extremely good either)

japan won the first 2 world championships actually. granted, that was before america started joining them, but they're still one of the best international teams

our senior team has still never lost a single game in international play and are 3 time defending world champions

        >they're still one of the best international teams
I don't doubt that, but who the frick plays American football outside of America? You're the only country with actual expertise in it, it's not a global and contested sport at all. But it's your most popular sport. I can't imagine Japan having the raw player material OR the knowledge/infrastructure it takes to even put a dent in any decent US youth team, but they can probably be better than everyone else by, well, having some people play and others come up with tactics

every year on january 3rd, whoever was the professional champion by winning the X-bowl and whoever was the college champion by winning the koshien bowl play each other to determine japan's ultimate champion of american football.

they call it the rice bowl
it's older than the super bowl
there have been 77 rice bowls

            Anonymous

Didn't they cancel the Rice Bowl and now it's just two teams from the X-League playing each other because the X-League became good enough that they just shitstomped the colleges every time?

          >I don't doubt that, but who the frick plays American football outside of America?
Japan, Mexico, Canada, unironically Germany pulls some decent crowds, same with Spain, and the UK has a shitton of amateur teams.

          >it's not a global and contested sport at all
over a hundred nations have leagues and there's been a world championship held every 4 years starting in the 90s

nobody is on our level but to pretend nobody else cares enough to try is either ignorant or willfully stupid

            Anonymous

            >there are Ameriboos in 100 countries
Not surprising, but that doesn't mean it's a sport of global relevance. I didn't say nobody cares enough to try, I said nobody cares enough to make it a sport with global relevance and therefore any sort of high level outside the US. If anyone seriously thinks American football is more than a national US phenomenon in terms of professional play as a whole, then we have nothing to talk about in the first place.

There apparently are 9 foreign-born players in the hall of fame, two of them are kickers, two are Canadians, three are Americans born in Honduras/Guatemala/Mexico, two are German/Italian who moved to the US as infants

The American football equivalent of Bundes.3 (NCAA Division III). So basically players that weren’t even good enough for D-I, I-AA, or D-II at the collegiate level.

One thing you should know is that if America ever loses in one of their sports is because their best players weren't allowed to play because they literally don't care about international competitions.

I think only their basketball team has ever lost with all their stars. 2004 vs Argentina and 1972 vs Soviet Union (but everyone says this one was rigged)

      Anonymous

nevermind, NBA players only played from 1992 so 1972 doesn't count.

2004 is still the only time the nation actually felt shame in losing an anticipated international competition. Everything else is something nobody heard of until after the fact.

Does that make Japan WORLD CHAMPIONS, like the US always claims?

      Anonymous

this was the U20 (junior) world championships semifinals so no japan still needs to beat canada. the senior team world championships are next year

      junior world championships:
      3 - canada
      2 - USA

      world championships:
      3 - USA
      2 - japan

      women's world championships:
      4 - USA

      flag football world championships:
      5 - USA
      3 - Austria
      1 - Canada, France

      world university championships:
      3 - mexico

there's also high school level championships for each age group, which often requires teams of USA vs The World (USA still usually wins)

I bet you guys didn't even know that there was supposed to be a world championship in 2019 but it was canceled because IFAF was having a CIVIL WAR

    >old president resigns under pressure from nations who prefer another guy
    >president tries to un-resign but the other guy claims it's illegitimate and doesn't count
    >entire world splits into two factions, one based in New York and the other based in Paris
    >they each try organizing their own world championships and threaten to treat nations from the opposing faction as forfeits if they don't switch sides
    >eventually has to be taken to international sports court to decide
    >court rules in favor of IFAF New York
    >USA won IFAF

      Anonymous

Didn't the Paris one try to ban the US from competitions or some shit?

        Anonymous

they tried to discredit the organizing body of american football (USA football) as delegitimate and replace them with their own puppet org on their side (USFAF)... kind of like a vichy france situation

when the sports court ruled in favor of IFAF new york, they threw out USFAF too and reinstated USA football as the only legitimate american football governing body in USA
