Las Vegas Athletics

Why the frick would you leave Oakland to still play in California for 3 seasons before finally moving to Vegas?
Could they seriously not even find a suitable temp stadium in Nevada in order to establish a firm local fanbase before moving into their new Vegas stadium?
This is insanity.

Las Vegas Ballpark is pretty much the best baseball venue in the state right now, and their capacity is 10,000 standing.

That said, I don't know of any California-based venues that are both not used by other MLB Franchises and above that capacity... so this whole thing reeks of ego and overplaying their hand.

The players union would never accept playing in the Vegas sun without a roof. It was like 110 degrees there the other day. The owner wants to hang on to that sweet sweet Northern California TV money that he'll be lucky to get a fraction of in Nevada for as long as he can. Lastly, the honeymoon phase with the city would be spent with the current lineup that's designed to lose and drive fans away. They want at least three years to make the roster more presentable which is about as guaranteed as a lottery ticket.

So it’s the Sacramento ballpark which also seats 10,000 for now (along with 4,000 for lawn seating!). And they won’t be called the Sacramento, Las Vegas, or Oakland Athletics. They will just be called The Athletics like a true homeless bum.

It’s not going to be permanent without sufficiently sized stadium and Sacramento used up all its money on the Kings. The whole reason MLB has given the owner this much leeway is so they get to expansion as soon as possible. They will not move forward with that until the A’s and the Rays both have a long term solution. They will NOT allow a minor league stadium limbo any more than they have to.

I reckon they might not even spend the full 3 seasons in Ballsackramento. I think they might move to LA Ballpark within a year after some temporary renovations to the stadium. Or maybe some other temp setup in Nevada. Reno, perhaps.

          Anonymous

It’s funny you mention Reno. In the whole state, that is the only city that would have had natural A’s fans in the first place before this debacle as the place that served Northern California customers. Well Vegas is 3 hours farther from Reno than Oakland. Residents of that city will have their own tax money used to move "their" team AWAY from them.

No there isn’t, lmao. Cope on.

And you as a foreigner still don’t quite seem to understand that American teams operate on markets, not strictly the cities by themselves. And baseball teams in particular depend on market strength a lot more compared to the other three. Vegas may be cool and shiny, but it makes a godawful market when you take a hard look at the numbers. It’s no better than Milwaukee around that level. The East Bay shits on the both of them and any competent businessman would make it work there. Even the Raiders' owner wanted to stay but the A’s owner got in the way. The former still hates and blames the latter, wanting nothing to do with each other if he's followed to Vegas.

NHL did well because they moved to an empty market.
NFL did well because it’s the NFL. NFL only has a few games per year and teams don’t get to sell their regional media rights.
NBA will probably do fine since NBA is pretty much perfect for Las Vegas.

But the market is saturated, and it’s not a good place for an MLB team. And none of these other leagues rely on regional media rights like the MLB does

Las Vegas is ranked 40th in media market size and has 2 pro teams already (and it’s only a matter of time before NBA adds a team there as well, honestly surprising they weren’t first).

Sacramento is ranked 20th, with nearly twice as many households as Las Vegas. Las Vegas has a lot of tourism, but also a lot of competition when it comes to entertainment.

I’m skeptical that the ‘selling tickets to tourists’ strategy is going to work.

It works for NFL because NFL has less games. NFL teams also don’t depend on regional media rights, like MLB does.
Sacramento has less things to do, so you can get more corporations to buy seats. Why would Las Vegas corporations buy seats when there’s tons of other entertainment options?

Some rich dude in Sacramento may buy a box. A rich dude in Vegas ain’t going to do that, there’s plenty of better ways to flex in that city.

There's this idea that Sacramento would show up in order to "prove" that they're worthy of an expansion when that time comes. Which is a horrifying thought since it would just prove that if they tolerated and even supported someone as israeli as Fisher that they'd do it again. But after the novelty wears off it ought to be a Tennessee Oilers kind of embarrassment.

You had the backing of a commissioner that wanted to stay in Sacramento. MLB has been conspiring against Oakland since the late 90s. Heed my warning of how if you prove you could tolerate Fisher, that you’ll be expected to do it again. To top it off you might not be just used and dumped for this, but used as the leverage to drive up the asking price for SLC’s expansion fee. Anyone in support of this has either no clue or no dignity.

The real Americans who are from and live there will soon be dead, and the new American tech sexless moron will take over and never leave their home to go see a game. The bay is destroyed and completely gay now. No more Whites and suburban mexicans? No more baseball. And dishwasher mexicans do not count since they are too busy working three jobs and their children are running in the streets and losing their lives to drugs and crime.

    >it won’t work in Vegas because it just won’t okay
the excuses that Oakland losers come up with are pathetic

It won’t work because the owner still hasn’t secured his funding or a stadium plan besides a design IDEA for the stadium, which took months past its deadline to release

I do deny that. I have absolutely no problem with MK Dons. Albeit I don’t follow that sport at all, so.

It's not really to say that Vegas in a vacuum won't work, it's more about Fisher, his specific Tropicana scheme, and that it's empirically a downgrade from the Bay Area. There are other locations and owners that can and have done it right, but everything about the A's is a maelstrom of idiocy, obfuscation, and malice the more you read about it.

That’s what the A’s need man. This bay area shit ain’t it anymore. More family vibe in Vegas, if you can believe it. You just tell your kids, “hey this place is nuts, but feel good cause most people here just want to live and have fun.” But the bay area is this radical left mental frick money-money-money I’m to design the next skrimblo app that rapes your dickhole with data cameras. Vegas is the move, trust.

My parents took me to Vegas for my birthday as a kid at it was fricking awful. Weirdos trying to flip me cards for strip clubs
          >money-money-money
Sounds like the thing a team would be looking for

It might be better now. I used to work with a kid with autism. Asian kid, his family was from Vietnam, he loved going to Vegas! His dad was a magician I think. And hey, those dudes just didn’t want you turning out gay man. People from there are normal believe it or not. Nice too, — I worked the Census in 2020. I went door to door in the 118 degree heat. People gave me water, offered me all kinds of shit. I met white people, black people, gay people, mexican people who had adopted kids, black people who had an adopted white kid, people who work for the airlines and they just stay there most times, people who gave me all the gossip about they’re cheating neighbors, you name em I met em. They were down to earth. The bay area is nothing but 44 year old childless women who refer to their friends as ‘homies’ and tech people who really are ugly ass nerds.

That's how everywhere is. When you work for the census you see people of all types, when you're in a scene you think everything is that scene.
You sound like you associate the East Bay with Punk and Indie shows and Vegas with going door to door in the midsummer in a semi-urban sprawl.
People in scenes of any sort really will distort your view of the world.
I used to think Communism was a realistic idea for America and Bernie Sanders could win an election. My brother is in the scene still and still believes it.
When I try to hold any position that is outside the scene it's quickly refuted and mocked loudly. Scenes are just one giant hugbox. The bay area is much more diverse than tragic middle aged burnouts and techies who haven't really changed their appearance since conception.

A's should just move to LA. The NYC metro area can make three hockey teams work so why couldn't LA with baseball?

uh, yes it did? Chargers dont draw anybody, even the rams are outperforming them, and are STILL outnumbered by away fans at SoFi. The chargers only came to LA because their owner is a greedy shitbag

I didn’t say there were going to get any more popular, but that it wouldn’t stop them from going where they weren’t wanted.

so they can pay for a more expensive stadium and get even less fans? who do they think is going to help finance it?

            >who do they think is going to help finance it?
That's a very great question that they are VERY wishy washy about! The private contribution is at least $1.2 billion dollars which would probably balloon given overruns, how things in general keep going up in price by the minute, and so on. Only the Yankees have spent that kind of money on a baseball stadium and the A's are certainly not the Yankees. They claim that the family can afford that portion entirely but would REALLY like it if they could find some other people to pitch in by selling minority shares of the team. Evidently they couldn't find any takers, they've hired a broker to find buyers for them.

But that depends on how the team is to be priced. Apparently they want to price the team as if the move already happened (around $2 billion and extremely presumptuous) as opposed to where the team is right now ($1 billion). That way they sell a quarter of the team for $500 million to go towards the stadium. That's a lot of money to remain a limited partner and have basically no say in how the team is run. And why should you believe any value when the move hasn't actually happened yet, revenue will be shit for at least three years by playing in a minor league park, and will be a big question mark afterwards without a TV deal or eager fanbase. There will be no ballpark village that's the goldmine every owner wants nowadays. Hell, there might not be anything at all given how the casino company they are partnering with is in no rush to develop their part of lot. They have commitments elsewhere that come first and can't afford to build anything after they've demolished the current hotel to make way for whatever comes after.

And if you want the best irony when this farce ends, the team president attended the ribbon cutting of the latest resort to open on the Strip which took 15 years to happen after groundbreaking due to... funding issues!

    > Could they seriously not even find a suitable temp stadium in Nevada in order to establish a firm local fanbase before moving into their new Vegas stadium?
    Yes.
