An english team didn't lose tonight. An English trained player scored a hatrrick. The first in a euro final for 40+ years. He was shit here. Moved to club that works with 90s Juve's old doctor. With a manager who got a ban for interfering with drug tests. Who've had players and ex players done for peds and who can press like mad for a match. They're quite obviously juiced to the breasts - leverkusen probably are in some way too but atalanta tonight were vroooooooom

I love Atalanta so much. A forever lower mid-table Italian side from a city always overhshadowed by Milano. Before Gasperini took over, they only played European football twice (1989 to 1991) and with only one trophy in their case (Coppa Italia in 1960).

With a very limited budget and a roster of rejects and unknowns, he managed to qualify to Europe playing attacking, flowing football, then made it to the UEL knockout stage, to the Champion's League quarter finals, to 3 more CL appearances and now a European trophy. And all this while losing their best pieces and flagship players to bigger, wealthier clubs, and only spending when making big sales (aka Hjolund to United). A very rare case of a club "turning big" without the involvement of a sugar daddy or a huge cash injection of any kinds, in 2024 no less.

This is the equivalent of West Brom, Bochum or Osasuna winning the Europa League

their state-of-the-art youth sector doesn't get mentioned often enough. it's incredible how every year Atalanta promote at least a couple of good players from their ranks that could end up being starters for the top flight's major teams, meaning they never run out of talent and money.
this long-term vision is paying off big time, and their focus on collaboration & impressive network of youth facilities and training centres spread across the nation will be all the more important in the near future, considering the restrictions that the scrapping of the Growth Decree (tax relief that allowed Italian teams to pay less tax for players arriving from foreign leagues) will bring for Serie A. it is no coincidence that Atalanta is the only club to have registered an Under23 team playing in the lower leagues together with Juventus.
I am not entirely familiar with the new ownership who took over the club from the Percassi family, but imo they made an absolute bargain.

Still too early to judge. With Inter dumped onto the hands of a vulture fund, Milan playing Russian roulette with the transfers and Juventus starting out with a new manager and director of football, it's just difficult to say. Bologna's addition to the number of teams qualifying for UCL is exciting but could also make a dent in the coefficients like Osasuna was for Spain this year.

The top 3 will never reach Madrid/Buyern/City levels of european dominance.

          >Milan owners openly confirming they're going for profits and not titles
          >Juventus (I don't need to elaborate)
That being said some midtable teams have made a lot of progress, the business model spearheaded by Atalanta and (unironically) Napoli has been picked up and will be followed by new money teams like Como, Parma, Venezia, Palermo, Monza etc, so the league could end up being more competitive than ever.

This started in the early 2010's. They should have won more trophies but Gasperini is a bigger overthinker than Guardiola and choked a lot.

            >the business model spearheaded by (unironically) Napoli
What model? A 18th-century land baron driving everyone away with his megalomania after years of efforts towards winning a title? The same person who, to curry favour with the football association, sells out to the Abruzzo local authorities by planning some summer friendlies in Castel di Sangro for dirt cheap?

Unironically yes? Napoli have found decent players out of thin air and flipped them for trophies for a decade now. ADL acts moronic because he's convinced it's useless to go for trophies every year so Napoli will never be a top club, but when I was a kid they were in serie C and now they're a regular upper table fixture and managed to win a Scudetto.

            >he's convinced it's useless to go for trophies every year
It would be a perfect excuse to act smart and buy low/sell high consistently; but then again, he quietly sneaked in his sons in the decision-making roles of the club even though they do not have the qualifications or licences, faffed around to find a replacement for the manager job or sporting director, and ended up with the value of the squad halved because the many pissed off players are ready to check out. In economic terms, this sounds more like the business model with which a homestyle snackbar is run.
But I guess it's alright, De Laurentiis is that way because he's too intelligent to win.

I've explicitly said Napoli will never be a top club because of ADL being moronic. Still, becoming upper table regulars was a good result and something all the new money coming into Serie A would be more than happy with.

Explain to me then how Atalanta have been regularly cashing in on their young prospects throughout the 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. If it is not one of the best organised youth sectors, it should not be selling players like Donati, Cigarini, Conti, Pelizzoli, Caldara and Gagliardini at such high figures (keeping in mind that an offer of 10 million euros from 2009 is the equivalent of a 30 million euros one now).

Atalanta could unironically rest some of the players for the final because they didn't have a result streak to defend at all costs for 100+ minutes every game. That and Gasperini (30 years in coaching) being much much more experienced than Xabi (only 6-7 years) as a manager

They pressed very well. Usually teams only manage to keep it up for 20 minutes, but they disrupted Leverkusen the whole match. Leverkusen never got into the match, gave away possession too easily and their defense also slept at times. The 2:0 was essentially gifted to Atalanta. Xabi should have started more physical players.

Xabi forgot that soccer was a physically demanding sport yesterday. He thought Wirtz, Ping Pong, Grimnaldo etc were young Messi. In reality, all of them got pressed to death by Atalanta.

Leverkusen had a super easy path to the final.
Qarabag -> fricking west ham -> Roma

    Meanwhile Atalanta had
Sporting (winners of the Portuguese league) -> Liverpool (first place in PL at the time) -> Merseille

If you actually followed europa league and football in general you would had known the match wasn't gonna be easy. Instead you morons read some headlines about Xabi Alonsos Leverkusen unbeaten form! Ate up the hype like dumbasses and fell for a trap of your own making.

      >Roma

Xavi won only because Karsdorp and Mancini scored own goals. Also Lakaka is slow and fat, I didn't understand why he is considered to be good.

And both Qarabag and Roma played better.
