If MLS really has all that parity that you guys talk about then it should be able to sustain itself in a pro/rel situation

It has sustained for us because how the league was structured (or the lack of that structure) in the old days
So if MLS really has good economic parity it shouldn't be a problem for you either

Except in Uruguay, Egypt, Peru, and an assload of other countries. If you don't use drafts and salary caps to force long-term parity, a handful of teams will naturally dominate any given league.

I don't understand why you people think like this. If you took away the salary cap, and gave out the best draft picks and most money to the most successful teams, do you really think your sports would be any different to top tier Euro football leagues just because you don't have relegation? Football's lack of parity at the top level has nothing to do with relegation and everything to do with compounding advantage.

Well exactly, those are the things causing parity, not a lack of relegation. Promotion and relegation aren't the cause of football not having parity, and a lack of promotion and relegation isn't whats causing US sports to have parity. The two are completely orthogonal.

Or to put it another way, if the Prem become a closed shop but kept the money distribution the same, would it suddenly gain parity? Obviously not.

More has to do with the fact American sports teams have only 32 teams and a salary cap
Has nothing to do with pro/rel

        Anonymous

I get what you're saying, but you're delusional if you think that relegation doesn't exacerbate the gulf in financial resources between the top and most potential challengers

        Anonymous

Relegation doesn't make sense in a system with salary caps. Caps are all about equality and having pro/rel and a whole bunch of leagues is the opposite of that. There are also a whole bunch of incentives that work against equality when you have pro/rel: why would you leave yourself open to the risk of relegation by instituting a salary cap, why would you have too much redistribution to help out another club when they might end up getting relegated anyway? Our system is inherently free market, survival of the fittest, so FFP and salary caps and any sort of fairness just don't fit.

Tanking is the most soulless thing imaginable and a relegation battle sounds more exciting, and I like how many Euros end up playing for their hometown teams with the academy system there. But I don't want to deal with at all and maybe this is the price we pay.

The Yankees have only won 5 championships since Reagan was inaugurated. All the dominance of the teams with the most championships in American leagues were from their farmers and plumbers eras. The opposite is the case in Europe where the dominant dominate even harder today while things were more varied back then.

redistribution just doesn't work in an open system. where are we supposed to redistribute to? the championship? the efl? the national league? there has to be a cut off point. there has to be a group of clubs that are inside and those that are out. in other words, no pro/rel

            The issue isn't being rigged
It's just there are no interesting aspects of our leagues
            It's all plastic
There is no reason to care about the Cowboys or the 49ers
The NFL, NBA, MLB etc wants to strip away every aspect of the identity with the cities so basically you're just rooting for just colors and jerseys not your local team
The leagues don't need to rig the leagues because they'll manufacture the interest

Bit weird to say this when the Prem is full of teams that have been in the lower tiers in recent memory. Only 6 teams haven't spent time down there in the Prem era. 4 teams have come all the way up from the 4th tier.
