we have some really good players and some really shit ones, and mediocre coaches, i think we are far off from being one of the best basketball teams in the world.
do we REALLY like playing basketball? yeah, sorta, its the 2nd sport i see people playing over here besides football and we have a local league and everything (without much exposure, granted), but professionally we have fallen a long way since the days of Ginobili

south slavs just love sports. it's as simple as that. yugoslavian sports education simply built on that fact and >we're still enjoying the benefits of it.
if you don't do individual sports as a Slovene, play footy outside as a Croat or basketball as a Serb, you're a weirdo.

Yugoslavia was too good for this world.
Mostly it was the victim of the fact that being in the middle of the USSR and USA's sphere's of influence gave them a mix of heavily carved out and defined ethnic regions like the Soviets and firm ethnic divisions like the Americans leading to an inevitable civil war once the popular guy was dead and the Bosnians, Croats, Slovenians, Serbs, MonteBlack folks and so on had to agree on government. They couldn't Soviet it up and give the states more rights while keeping power central like the Soviets and they couldn't just have Congressional Catfights like the Americans so they had a really violent breakup over what place of worship you went to. Because if Christianity and Islam say anything it's "kill for me"

Religion has nothing to do with war and hatred of Croats and Serbs is not religious hatred. At stake are national interests, borders that Serbia wanted, money that Serbia wanted (Yugoslavia was dependent on Croatian foreign exchange, Croatia and Slovenia financed the rest of the country), power, control. The leaders of the Croats and Serbs in that war were atheists/communists.

In America they framed it as Muslims, Catholics and Orthodox Christians can't get along. It's sad that we were told that and it's sad that you guys care so much about your little ethnic differences.

What are the differences between the English and the Americans? In other words, you also fought a war for independence, even though you and the English were literally the same people, with the same religion, history, culture and alphabet.

            Anonymous

there was no difference at the time. during the american revolution it wasn't american vs british. the colonies still saw themselves as british

            Anonymous

That's exactly what I'm telling you. There was no difference between you and the English and the war happened anyway. And now imagine two countries that have never had a single point of contact in history. Our rivalry is younger than 100 years. All you foreigners think it's a centuries-old rivalry that arose because of religion. The truth is exactly the opposite.

This. People need to learn that Croats and Serbs never had beef before the Great War and if they would behave like civilised humans and ruled the first Yugoslavia fair there would never be beef

I mean, I understand that the ex-Yu countries are small and insignificant on the world stage and that the average American can't even find his own country on the world map. For this reason, your media has simplified the story so that you can understand it, and the religious label served well in that function, but the story is much more complicated than that.
