the overall quality drop off since elimination chamber has been insane. I was really excited for this year but the build has been dogshit. I get that they probably had to change a bunch of plans due to everything going on. but christ

since elimination chamber? that was like 3 weeks ago. the dropoff started like 20 years ago, 10 if you are a smark

It all went to shit after Summerslam and that all time shit match between Reigns and Jey + the Jimmy turn which was moronic

the booking in general just seems so different since then. that period between summerslam 2022 and summerlsam 2023 was fricking great and then it all fell apart. I've always sort of assumed that period was HHH booking + vince ghostwriting

This. Post-Mania was rough but they were at least kicking ass with the ppvs each month. The wheels completely fell off at SummerSlam which had to be one of the worst ones, if not the worst I've seen in 20+ years. It's only been downhill since and I was really hoping things would get better in time for Mania. It feels like a night and day difference from where this Bloodline angle was last year compared to this year

weird that when its supposedly worse now its even hotter than when it was "good". i think the show is pretty much the exact same level of quality, its just the smark honeymoon period is over

hhh is a ridiculously long term booker and having multiple of his plans get fricked over made his scramble really obvious and he tried to adapt but its not as good as what it would have been (seth/punk, drew/sami, gunther/brock)

Man you are right. The ratings show that interest has been down since Elimination Chamber. Even before then they couldn't get over 800k viewers and now are struggling to...oh shit wait that's AEW.

Kek. Enjoyment can come from more than just tv ratings though anon. I couldn't tell you the first thing about what numbers the 2016 era of Smackdown Live got. Nor did I care. Because I just enjoyed the hell out of it each week

I know, I enjoy AEW every week. The thing is, AEW has only gotten better with time, whereas the dropoff in WWE's quality coincides pretty much 1:1 with its ratings.

          Anonymous

Funny you say that because I was just saying the opposite here

This is why I don't get why people cling so tightly to all of this ratings talk, because you're exactly right. They've been in a steady decline for at least 20 years and very little has it reflected when the product has actually been good or not. 2013 WWE was the absolute shits but I guarantee you if you go back and check the numbers they probably were doing better than what we're seeing for Raw and Smackdown now

I agree with you on AEW. Their numbers have been brutal but the quality of their shows has improved a shit ton over the past year to the point they've got me watching weekly again. I'm not enjoying WWE as much as I am a year ago but to the point I was making in that other post I am still enjoying it a hell of a lot more than I have at times in the past where it's gotten a higher rating. I don't know. Whether something is 'good' is a lot more subjective than something as objective as numbers can tell the full story on

What caused that giga drop after 2000?

        Anonymous

It just fell out of popularity. Wrestling was a huge part of pop culture during the Attitude Era. Trends and fads come and go and that was one. There was a pretty big cultural shift altogether after 9/11 too. Then there's just the fact that as time's gone on and the way we consume media has evolved there have been more and more channels and now there's streaming and it's to the point everyone can create their own little niche bubbles of what they like while hardly ever really having to face anything beyond it. There is no more pop culture. Everyone is so dispersed and numbers across everything are down. Not to mention people dropping off with cable over the years too

This would assume there would've been an equal upward spike around 2006 when they moved back to USA

            Anonymous

by then wrestling had cooled off and they had lost a lot of viewers for other reasons, besides those people who watched in 99 and 2000 and stopped because they didn't have TNN weren't going to all start watching again they forgot about wrestling in those 5 years
there is a small uptick in late 2005 on the graph though which is when they moved back

Have you tried watching stuff from then? It went from trash TV to a soap opera. Every RAW and SD from 2000 onwards has at least one 20 minute promo from Vince or HHH/Steph. It continues into 2002 but now you've got Flair cutting 20 minute promos. We won't even talk about 2003. It's no surprise at all that the audience that wanted attitude dropped that garbage. Try and rewatch it now and you'll be fast forwarding before you even make it through 2 weeks worth of RAW and SD.
