Chelsea is the original oil club (Russian instead of Arab). They went from a shit and worthless club to the top of England after an oligarch invested massive money in that club

they were shit but i wouldn't go that far
i was surprised to learn they were my dad's second team (he's a geordie of all things)

How much did Chealse matter before Abramovic? How is that different to City?

chelsea were sort of between a villa or a wolves today, in that they'd often get top half finishes and the odd cup final in the prem but needed a push to go the distance. which is why when they brought mou in with all the blood money they immediately started winning shit the same year
city actually had more silverware (they might still do?), but it was all from the literal victorian they'd even dropped down to the third division at one point, a lot of the >115 are about the money they used paying off dodgy debt from the championship years

writing all that out i suppose there isn't much difference, but i still think city was a much stranger choice than chelsea. if i were a headchopper or a russian oligarch i'd buy newcastle, leeds, christ i would've bought sunderland before city. it's like if they bought valladolid or something

In the 90s, Chelsea's avg attendance was regularly less than Man City got when they were in the 3rd division.

            98/99
            >Chelsea, Premier League, avg attendance: 33,387
            >Man City, Second Division (third tier for ESLs), avg attendance: 28,273
            eh but it's close.
the thing is that Manchester has two clubs, London has loads. In the same season for other London-based PL clubs, West Ham was 25,684, Spurs 34,174, Arsenal 38,024. Wimbledon 18,207, and Charlton Atheltic 19,823. Chelsea does ok here.

Man City was only in the third tier for one season in the 1990s (98/99) and Chelsea's average attendance was higher so strictly speaking your post is inaccurate.
For the earlier years in that decade, Stamford Bridge - like other grounds with high terrace capacity, had to be reduced during renovation.

            >Manchester has two clubs, London has loads
london also has loads more people, genius

London also has a lot of lower league clubs too, which is yet more competition for attracting fans. Manchester only had two teams in the Football League until Salford came along recently.

I said "regularly in the 90s" not specifically 98/99.

            >For the earlier years in that decade, Stamford Bridge - like other grounds with high terrace capacity, had to be reduced during renovation.
Bugger all difference between that and the 80s though before they had to go all seater.
