Tony Khan has the budget and the autism (in a good way) to fund AEW for the next 40 years, but his ideas for modern wrestling are mismatched

He is attempting to implement NJPW ring-centric style in the US and is doing so by hiring mostly ex-WWE wrestlers who are known more for their talking/characters than their wrestling. When he does sign non-WWE acts like Okada or Ospreay, the contracts are seen more as rewards for their years of service to Pro Wrestling smarkdom, not a reflection of their market value or ability to create an ROI for AEW.

It feels like when your rich friend buys the new $900 video game console with the $300 deluxe controller and $150 ruby edition game, and invites the crew over. You sit there and watch while tries to figure everything out, barely goes over the first boss, jobs hopelessly to the second boss - and refuses to let anyone else have a turn. "No, I'll get it this time, just watch. OK, just one more. Wow, I was so close, just one more run..." -- The game looks awesome, it's unlike anything you've ever seen before, you can't afford anything like it, it's better than sitting at home...but how long until you get bored? Will he really never let anyone else have a go at it?

I'm not "mad" at Tony, I don't wish him/AEW to fail, but his strategy is confusing to me. I think AEW is old enough for him to know who's there to help AEW grow, who will do silly gimmicks, who will put over Infantry on AEW Collision in a Tag Tourney match if it makes storyline sense, etc --- and who's just an butthole sitting at home, refusing to do jobs, won't put young talent over, won't sacrifice anything at all for the long-term benefit of the company

Once Tony starts firing/releasing more people, I will actively root for AEW a lot more. Right now I'm another bewildered onlooker, hoping they right the ship - but with knowing TK would prefer to lose money doing things "his way" rather than make profit doing things the WWE/Cornette way, it's disappointing

        >make profit doing things the Cornette way

        I ran over character limit

WWE/Cornette/Territory/Establishment, however you would term it. Mix of long-term and short-term storytelling, character development, celebrity appearances, talk shows, arm wrestling/bench press competitions, authority figures, gimmick matches, heel inviting a fan into the ring to embarrass them, grudge matches in lieu of title fights, mic/promo battles, etc.

The AEW formula is mostly: long TV matches, dream matches, less gimmicks, limited DQ/Count Out/No Contest, limited recaps/video packages, lots of title belts, one-person interviews, 4-5 hour PPVs with little room to breathe (Sting's retirement speech got cut)

AEW have changed a bit for 2024 which is exciting. Samoa Joe/Swerve/Hangman have been having promo battles - Wardlow/Jericho even had one. Toni Storm is knocking it out of the park, Mariah May showed a nice wrinkle. Willow/Stat/Stokely is developing. It just needs more behind it for it to really capture the attention of casual fans. AEW has enough goodwill at this point to not drive away it's hardcore fans by adding 20 minutes of silliness to each show, but that 20 minutes of silliness could drive the viewership another 100-150k which the show desperately needs right now.

this is one of the good things about them

Yes and No. If Swerve/Takeshita happens anywhere other than AEW, it ends in a DQ after a 12 minute back and forth match. Or there's an interference spot, Takeshita "wins", and then the authority figure comes marching to the ring, demands the match be restarted, and if Callis interferes, he'll be FIRED on the spot

Or they could have the referee count to 8 while Takeshita is outside the ring, Swerve distracts the ref momentarily, his next feud/opponent whacks Take with something (ref doesn't see it), ref turns back around and continues counting......Swerve wins by count out. A win is a win, but they can revisit feud down the road because "You never beat me in the ring!"

etc etc and on and on. There can be so much more storytelling and development behind it than the likely 20+ minute match to open Dynamite we'll likely get with Swerve going over clean, or with Fletcher/Hobbs walking to the ring only to be cut off by FTR (or someone). Needs more imagination.
