Resisting the urge to make any jokes about this. Seriously, if I had to say at this point:

    >Cody (I hated his Codyverse but he was responsible for a lot of the early setting up and bringing in young talent)
    >Kenny Omega (underappreciated in AEW but he's been the undeniable ace of the company. Always reliable for 5 star matches and has given us as many best bouts as he can while his body and healthy were/are literally deteriorating)
    >Chris Jericho (another one that helped as the company's first champion and mainstream name bringing new eyes to the product, alongside Kenny Omega had the initial big crossover match at WK that planted the seeds for AEW)
    >CM Punk (in these short 5 years made his return to pro wrestling via AEW and was responsible for some of the biggest buzz the company has ever had good or bad, he's had some of the most significant impact on the company and its trajectory)

This is all subject to change but the two that I'm confident stay on are Cody and Omega.

Cody can't be on there unless he returns someday. Phil can't be on there because he tried his best to burn it all down.

AEW is too young to have a rushmore period. If they did it'd be something shitty like Y2J, Mox, Sting, MJF.

        Anonymous

If we're being objective about it, ignore that Cody isn't with the company right now and purely measure based on contributions to AEW I feel like Cody HAS to be up there. I do agree AEW is too young for a Rushmore but this thread I'm assuming is simply for discussion's sake and up to this point.

        >Sting
Can't put Sting in there just because, besides his mere presence, he didn't add a ton to the show. He had some amazing moments, but it's not like he was doing a lot in the ring. If you go by just his work in AEW, he doesn't make Rushmore, though he unarguably added a lot to the promotion just by being there.

AEW Kenny is grossly underappreciated and undercelebrated. Dude flushed his hottest year down the toilet in 2019 because of AEW booking and still went on to sacrifice everything he's had physically to give us 5 star matches. When cards have been uncertain and could've been shit you could always rely on Kenny to save any given show that he was on single handedly. There's a weird void now that he's out.

Ospreay hasn't done nearly enough as a full time AEW guy yet. Neither has Okada although you could barely make an arguement for him because of his match series of Omega and what it's success did to pave the way for All In and AEW.

Be the greatest technical wrestler since Chris Benoit, who was the greatest technical wrestler since Bret Hart. Danielson could wrestle a broomstick to a 5 star classic, and it's a damn shame Tony has put the strap on him once since he debuted. I guarantee he'll get at least one short title run before he retires, though. Maybe win the AEW World Title on his retirement match, and then we can have another based tournament.

That is my Rushmore, and it's objectively correct. OC is one of the greatest characters in the history of pro wrestling, and he's a great athlete and an exceptional wrestler.

  16. 3 weeks ago
    Anonymous

I think Cena is overrated by zoomers but I would even say you can make an argument for him on Rushmore. He didn't nearly have the same impact as Rock, Austin or Hogan historically but he could be on there purely on his contributions to the company itself (less than the culture or his impact on pro wrestling as a whole). Like I hated the PG era but Cena was ridiculously over with small children and their moms during that time, was always reliable, did tons to help with the WWE's image like Make a Wish and made the company a lot of money numerically based on that small child demographic. Like in good faith I'd never say Cena was as good as Rock or Austin (I always say Cena was Hogan 2.0 so you could argue that) but he was the perfect company man.

I'm not the anon that said he's universally hated. I know that's not true. My point in chiming in is that Cena has never been what The Rock was at his peak.

NTA but not everybody hated Cena. He was massively over with kids and women. His match at ECW ONS 2 was one of the greatest things I've ever seen, though. Really showed how the traditional teenage-to-middle-age heterosexual male demographic felt about John.

all rock did was punch and do a kip up every now and then a sharpshooter and his matches were more entertaining than 90% of other matches

        Anonymous

Hard disagree. Prime Cena isn't in the same league as Rock, Austin and Hogan at their peaks. He'd be up there for how he directly helped the company not because matches the other 3 in greatness. If we're going on how great they were I'd rather put Taker, HBK, or Bret up there.

Cody and or hangman could’ve been in Ospreays slot but Cody never won the title nor was in aew that long while hangman seems to like taking hiatus when he’s just getting over again

      Anonymous

What have Ospreay's contributions to AEW been so far? He hasn't been here very long as a full time guy. His best AEW moment was the one Forbidden Door match against Omega. Not saying Ospreay won't be up there at some point but right now I don't know that he's been around long enough.

        Anonymous

Yeah but Cody was there longer than Ospreay's been you know. Plus you consider Cody's role in getting AEW up and on its feet, his role in All In, etc.

Point taken on Ospreay. I’d swap MJF in the last spot then, there’s an argument for Cody but just in terms of longevity and keeping interest up I’d give him the nod

Hangman could be capable of so much more but he stands in his own way. There was an anon who said the other day that he has this weird ability to find something to get over easily. Unfortunately it seems that for every couple of months he works he needs twice as much time off.

He just had a baby, family comes first. He reminds me of Sid Vicious a lot, I think he's really hitting his stride with the psycho heel gimmick. His biggest problem is that he almost always sounds so soft in his promos, even when he's yelling. But cutting promos on Swerve, you believe his hate.

AEW doesn't do house shows. I think Rampage is filmed the same time as Dynamite and most guys don't work Dynamite and Collision in the same week. He can go to work and still see his kid more than most dads can with a 9-5.

Boomers out here really trying to convince people that the rock was a good wrestler.
He's punches were awful and made up 90% of his offense. As a babyface he had dogshit comebacks, and as heel he basically needed to cave in Foley's head for his one good control segment.

For AEW's mount rushmore you have to start with the goat, John Cena, the attitude era was running off fans and he held onto as many as possible with ruthless aggression and made so many new ones with the PG era. There's no wrestling without him, so there's no AEW without him.
Next you gotta go with John Locke. Without capitalism there is no demonic upper class hoarding so much unearned wealth they can let their son play EWR in real life.
Third, we have Jim Cornette. Pretty much every good thing to happen in AEW is something Cornette said they should have done. Thanks Corny!
And then I guess like one of the bucks.
