There isn't even someone here to argue with you about it, probably in the penalty box while we score 5 power play goals before they pull the goalie completely.

      This
I first heard of him from Space Jam (a neighbour had the VHS and came over to watch it)
first heard of Babe Ruth from The Sandlot (1993) and then didnt know of another american sports athlete (as in: not a football player) until I was an adult except for Mike Tyson which I knew from word of mouth actually related to his fights and not other media starring/mentioning him

    >more famous than muhammed ali
all you can do is compare him to players of a 3rd world sport
gambling suspension cost him an 8peat
despite that, the consecutive 3peats have never been repeated

At one point in the early 90s he was almost as famous as the other MJ around the world. Even people without any knowledge about basketball knew who Jordan was. It was Magic and him, no other player was as popular as those two. Jordan was very protective regarding his image so there was definitely propaganda there. The more you learn about the real Jordan, the less likeable he seems. Jordan was lucky there was no social media back then if Sam Smith's "The Jordan Rules" is any indication.
He was also lucky this foul by Ewing in the 1995 "Double Nickel Game" at MSG didn't frick up his comeback, as Jordan's leg bent in a disgusting way. His legacy could've been altered dramatically there.

Every celebrity before 2005 was lucky social media didn't exist. That's why even though technically stars can be more popular than ever (if you just go by how many people know who you are), the days of living myths and legends are over. People can't be "larger than life" like they used to be. We know too much about them. They're too human now.

My dad, who grew up in the 90s, knows about him. And he literally never watched basketball or know anything about basketball. He's the only basketballer my dad knows. He is the only American athlete, outside of Muhammad Ali, he knows.

This must be one of the most moronic takes I have ever seen.
People used 'Jordan' as synonymous with 'great basketball player/goat' the way people used Pele/Maradona for soccer, Schumacher for driving, Ali for boxing etc.
It rarely gets more global than Jordan in history
