He's the only one with platitude quotes about wooden sticks and missing shots.

He's really only famous because he played in LA for a while, which was their plan. If he didn't then nobody would know who he was outside of hockey fans.

There isn't and you are dumb. What about Tim Horton, Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, Sidney Crosby, Mario Lemieux, and Andrew Mangiapane?

    Several reasons

    1. Attention/social
For viewers/fans, hockey is a sport that demands attention. Blink and you'll miss it. Social people who watches sport more for the gathering are not fans of it since they have little time to chat/celebrate/drink. Soccer is a sport which builds half of its fame on the songs sung by the audience, fights/fireworks and such.

    2. Athlete
It's a very allround sport. As a pro you need speed, strength, agility, hand-eye-coordination, wits, stamina. This complicates the appreciation for the athletes abilites; they do not stand out as easily compared to a quarterback or a 100-m sprinter. It's a team-game; the better team can beat the best player. The amount of shift a player takes also makes it harder for new fans to follow them.

    3. Money
The cost/chance to play is not the easiest. Frozen ice is not available for most folks. Good skates are expensive. Few have had the chance to play it and experienced the challenge/fun.

    4. Competion
There are other sports. TV and media sets the schedule. Money creates the demand.

    >Why is there only one famous hockey player?
Because he was the great one who valued an assist just as much as a goal. Those who did not follow hockey, were in awe of his fame which superseded the sport. He had his own cereal and pajama line and he didn't even have breasts. Transcending the sport is reserved for Gretzky, Jordan, Woods, and Pele. When your Grandma knows their names, they are the great ones.
