What's the significance of "the Premier League era" from a purely sporting perspective? Nothing about the format changed, # of teams in a league is always something that sees changes across time and indeed the Premier League itself shrank to 20 after a few years. So other than Sky TV's profits, what changed?

Clearly he's saying the English top league went from a knockout competition only involving league champions to a hybrid structure with a league phase and non-champion teams.

i don't want to have to pay attention to things that happened before I was born so marking the Premier League era as a different time keeps me from having to compare things I saw to things I didn't see.

I don't see anyone counting titles starting only from "the Champions League era". Real Madrid has 14 wins, Liverpool has 6 etc. and of course this applies to manager nationalities too

Is that sporting significance to you? I'll explain a little more for you to understand: Talking about Man Utd's achievement in the post-Fergie era makes sense as it has a direct sporting context - Fergie's retirement. Meanwhile, 1992 is an arbitrary point in which the top flight changed its commercial branding. Nothing changed. The winners are still crowned champions of England, just as the winners of the European Cup and the Champions League were both crowned champions of Europe.

changing the name is irrelevant if you take the name into account then the only teams with titles are the ones that won 2016 onwards

Football did not begin in 1992. Sky TV's scheme to boost their profits has no sporting significance.

If any spike in network deals would constitute a new era, there have been at least 2 more since 1992.

Was going to try to dunk on Bulgaria by looking up when an Anglo last won that league, but instead just found out that CSKA Sofia's current manager is a Serb that immigrated to England as a child and changed his name from "Jevtic" to (of all things) "El Maestro" because he was ashamed of being Serbian, kek.
