      >Serious American students of theology and divinity, particularly in New England, regarded Hebrew as a classical language, along with Greek and Latin, and essential for the study of the Old Testament in the original words. The Reverend Ezra Stiles, president of the college from 1778 to 1795, brought with him his interest in the Hebrew language as a vehicle for studying ancient Biblical texts in their original language (as was common in other schools), requiring all freshmen to study Hebrew (in contrast to Harvard, where only upperclassmen were required to study the language) and is responsible for the Hebrew phrase אורים ותמים (Urim and Thummim) on the Yale seal.

There’s most often a friend or family member that did who you can cheer with out of solidarity. It does create an interesting second network of who you do and don’t support unlike anything you’d see at the professional level. I’d never root for a college that wasn’t my own if I was 100% by myself, but with a bit of socialization, you can always find something in a pinch.

Are Ivy League unis any good at sports? And are sports like American football popular in those top tier unis where everything normies know about is academia?

Mostly just lacrosse and I think rowing.

      Anonymous

They can be good at a few sports, usually not team sports though. No the students don't really care about the football teams, usually the only time you hear about Ivy League football teams is when some students try to use the game as an opportunity to jump onto the field to protest something.

Ivy League is non-scholarship and generally considered a lower conference. In football, their in the tier 2 'subdivision' and don't even compete in the playoffs of it (by choice). Ivy League is the only non-scholarship conference in Division 1. They're not considered the worst conference by any margin, however (that would be the two Historically Black College conferences).

American Football is popular at bigger public schools mostly, many of which are highly respected in the USA but don't necessarily have much global recognition. Notre Dame is kinda considered academically elite but I don't think it has global recognition. Stanford competes in one of the "top conferences" but is shit at both football and basketball, same for UC-Berkeley.

Duke is considered academically elite and is one of the basketball powers. Basketball generally has the same 'power conferences' of football that are mostly made up of big public schools, but there's also another power conference with a bunch of Catholic schools that doesn't sponsor football.

The average person the other side of the world doesn't necessarily know those schools, unless you're someone who is knowledgeable about American universities.

How deep into your ass do you have to be to think that UCLA, USC and Michigan aren't among the most world renowned universities?
I get that a lot of people hate Los Angeles and a lot of people hate Ann Arbor for various social and cultural reasons. But to pretend that those 3 schools aren't among the most famous and academically elite in the world is disingenuous.
Same for Washington and Texas but to a lesser extent. But UCLA and Michigan are on par with Oxbridge or any Ivy.

So you admit it has great academics, is known throughout the world and is in one of the largest cities in the world that is one of the centers of global media production.
            What is UCLA Lacking? Gusto?

            Anonymous

UCLA isn't lacking in academics, just in name recognition for an average person. The average person in Asia is more aware of Berkeley than UCLA, even though they're basically the same academically.

That was my point. There's a lot of very highly regarded schools with popular football teams, but their names aren't as known as Stanford, Harvard and Yale. Also, UCLA does not have a popular football team, the only reason they're going to the Big Ten is to give USC a plus one. They're destined to be a punching bag

It was great academics. Doesn't mean it's on par with Ivy League schools or hell even Berkeley or Stanford. It's above USC though

Feels like people are arguing for the sake of arguing, UCLA is by every definition a globally recognized school in every respect, so is Michigan. The only reason anyone would argue otherwise is because they assumed the position in a debate.

I personally know many unis in burgerland because i'm also a fan of a B1G team.
But normies who are not into academics can recognize only a handful of those, which are the colleges that you see in Hollywood movies like the other anon said, or articles in pop-sci or normie news outlets where they say "Researchers form [some uni] showed that....". Those unis are (in no particular order):
        Harvard
        Princeton
        Stanford
        MIT
        Caltech
        Berkeley
