Candidates Chess Tournament 2022 - Round 1

Looking forward to see what they bring to the table for this first round. I think most eyes will be on Firouzja and Nakamura, but it will be very interesting to see if Ding can put together some good games and finally get his chance to challenge. Besides Caruana, Ding seems to be the player with the most prestige in this tournament.

Matches:
Duda vs Rapport
Ding vs Nepomniachtchi
Caruana vs Nakamura
Radjabov vs Firouzja

Streams:
Fide (Hess, Skripchenko, Naroditsky, Rensch):

Levitov Chess (Kramnik): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k__UAcEBk9o
Chess24 (Polgar, Gustafsson): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgD9BPdpzhE
ChessBase India (Shah, Mokal): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BKmYsq9WtNc
Chess.com: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qg6aLwwO4vY
Ben Finegold: https://www.twitch.tv/gmbenjaminfinegold
Anna and Pia Cramling: https://www.twitch.tv/annacramling

Unfortunately, Levitov Chess World have not listed a stream as of yet, and I can't find any streams with based Svidler. Also, Chessnetwork doesn't seem to be streaming, but hopefully that might change. Add any good streams if I missed them.

Analysis boards:
Lichess: https://lichess.org/broadcast/fide-candidates-tournament-2022/round-1/LsFeKWZU
I'm not sure if Sesse will be running (I doubt it), but if someone has any other supercomputer analyses, then post them.

Not anything to rundown. A lot of people just don't like it, probably partly because of luck being a considerable factor. Also the rules are probably a little complicated for a game that on the surface looks less interesting than other games.

that's true, some games you get crushed and can't do anything because the other guy keeps rolling doubles and perfect combinations. It's just that kinda game where you need a bit of momentum on your side.

i don't really care that much about the morality of the situation, but if he cared about playing chess then he'd have the brain to work out that FIDE having someone championing the Russian invasion would bring all sorts of bad press on them, which understandably they've chosen to avoid.

exactly right. people talk about radjabov being a draw-lord... all karjakin can do is try and hold on while showing zero fight. that's what he did during the WC match. ding is on an entirely different level

        Magnus about the Candidates
        >In terms of chances to win the whole thing, I would divide the players into three tiers. Tier one: the favourites. In this tier I would put Caruana and Ding. To me, they are the best and most consistent players in the field, and I would bet on one of the two winning against the field.
        >Tier two: the dark horses. Firouzja and Nepomniachtchi belong here. Neither of them have the consistency to be in the top tier, but they both have a ceiling which gives them a smaller, but still quite realistic chance of winning.
        >Tier three: the rest. I see a slight chance Rapport could make it if everything works out for him, but it feels very unlikely that he will survive seven black games against such opposition, even if he wins a few.
        >Nakamura will probably have a decent event, but I don't see him winning enough games to have a real chance. Duda and Radjabov I just don't think have any shot.

        >Tier two: the dark horses. Firouzja and Nepomniachtchi belong here
never let it be said that carlsen is a mean guy... there isn't a single GM in the world who believes that shit he just sold lol. nepo is literally the most exposed player in the history of top-level chess. it's hard to put his mental collapse into words. he got a WC match as a result of russian tampering (been going on for 100 years) and then proceeded to get trashed while spending 50% of his time in the bathroom. if i had done that in a team tournament as a 12-year-old my coach would have left me there. he's someone with zero fight in the context of a fighting game. before the match i kept posting this video over and over again:

that's who he is. a prep-monkey that blitzes out garbage lines while not even trying or giving his opponent respect. then he finds out he's in a lost position and pouts

what's the difference between magnus and nepo? one digs in and stares at the board when he's down... the other b***hes out and stares around the room or goes to the bathroom

Not a big fan of Russian invasions or people who attention prostitute on instagram over politics, but I wouldn't have banned him if it were up to me.

Nepo is the reddit candidate. They love him because of how “gentlemanly” he was while playing the most moronic, brain dead, frick stick, chess ever to be seen, essentially humiliating the entire chess world. If he had any honor, he would have unironically committed suicide. Instead in the press conferences he just wiggled his fat jowles around and said “no I didn’t see that it trapped my bishop” and reddit swoons going woooooowwwe he’s taking his loss so well ! He should be dead right now if he had any manhood

          Ladies and Gentlemen,

The careful study of the video recordings from the rest rooms done by the technical experts of the Bulgarian team revealed the following facts which we would herewith like to bring to your attention:

          1. After each move Mr. Kramnik immediately heads to the rest room and from it directly to the bathroom. During every game he visited the relaxation room 25 times at the average and the bathroom more than 50 times – the bathroom is the only place without video surveillance.

          2. Unlike Mr. Kramnik, the World Champion Veselin Topalov spends his time mainly at the playing table. The average number of times he visited the rest room and the bathroom is 8 and 4 respectively.

A short statistical sample derived from the camera recordings in the rest room during the third game shows:

          15.54 – Kramnik plays move 15
15.55 – Goes into the bathroom
15.56 – Goes out of the bathroom
15.57 – Goes into the bathroom
15.59 – Goes out of the bathroom
16.03 – Goes into the bathroom
16.04 – Goes out the bathroom
          16.07 – Comes out for move 16

The behavior of Mr. Kramnik is very similar to the above during all games played so far.

The logical question arises: How many times during a game does a player need to go to the bathroom and with what regularity? The logical answer is: between 5 -10 times at the most, but not 50 as the statistics from the games played so far shows.

We would like to once again remind you that the bathroom is the only place without video or audio surveillance.

They've been using notation since the end of the first season. Why are chess autists so against bringing in a more casual audience through simpler explanations and cute hosts?

I don't like the sideshow zoomer entertainment shit either, but putting charisma vacuum notation spam spergs like Svidler and Leko, or unlikeable smarmy douchebags like Grischuk or Gustafsson on your main streams is going to kill any potential new viewers.

Yes he's really famous and gets recognized all the time I'm sure but that time he just sat by himself and no one bothered him. I met Carlsen at a Orange Julius back in 2017. He was busy on his phone and didn't want to bother him. Then this homosexual who looked like a fat James Rolfe stopped and was like. Woah, your Magnus Carlsen. Without looking up his phone was like. Yeah...I AM! He then asked if he would sign his shirt. He replied that "he really doesn't sign things for people" dejected the homosexual waddled off without saying a world. Finally he got his Orange Julius and as he was paying for it I cut a foul smelling fart that made him gag so. OHHHH MAH GAHD. He glared at me and put his shirt over his nose. And snapped "what's your deal, kid" I told him to nicer to his fans. He scoffed and said Yeah...your nopt my agent. And left. What a fricking norwegian b***h. Glad his career is soon to be dead.

At an open tournament my coach was playing hikaru on board 1 so i left mine to go watch for a few mins. he starts staring right into my eyes with this psycho angry look and i stare right back at him with a smirk for what must have been 3 minutes. every time i'd pass him after that he'd stare me down. just a complete weirdo of a human being

What is the move or sequence the engine has been screaming at caruana to play and he keeps missing?

      Anonymous

It was this position, line is top right, after Qd6 all stockfish lines ended in black being forced to give up the exchange and being lost. Caruana played Qh4, blundering a draw. He had this position or very similar with Qd6 on the board 3 times

        Anonymous

finding Qd6 is so difficult in that position. even looking at the top engine line it's not clear exactly what you're doing

          Anonymous

yeah it does make almost no sense, it's all about getting Qf4 and Nf5 without the bishop being on d7 to trade, it wins the rook for the knight in about 10 moves or something, but this is why the engine was so sure fabi was winning

        Anonymous

        yeah ...Bd7 stopping Nf5 isn't possible after Qd6 because of Qd5+

really simple stuff for someone like fabi to miss

          Anonymous

its not Qd5+ after Bd7 because Be6, which does win the pawn but isn't quite as winning. It is a complicated line but fabi is 2770 so he should probably have won from this position

These are incorrect and misleading respectively. In the case of the latter, a lot of Kremlin bots repeatedly spam "they speak Russian therefore they live in territory that belongs to Russia" - there is no hard link between ethnicity and native language. Even Zelenskyy's first language is Russian but he's Ukrainian.

Does Romania have such a bigger market than you guys? Just throw him money. He is the best thing since Leko and tbh i like him a lot more than Peter. I may be biased(fanboying) but i ve thrown 50€ on him ending with 8.5+/14 AND winning the candidates. The dude impressed me so much two years ago at Norway chess. Pay up Magyar bros, he is worth it.

Yeah i think Judit said on stream it's a done deal

He had no sponsors lately. György Gattyán (owner of livejasmin) sponsored him for years, and that helped a lot but he stopped.

He was struggling, mostly because of money issues.

            ?t=267

I heard some Romanian businessman (who lives in Serbia, just like Ricsi) met him at the The Superbet Chess Classic Romania and offered him sponsorship but he has to switch flags.

            Which is a shame.

I see. I understand the dude completely, i just find it hard to believe that the romanians have that much more money to offer him or that chess is more popular over there. It's not like the mutts snatched him(which would be understanble)

            >mutts snatched him
            I wish they did...

A lot of people here hate Rapport for this. Nobody would care if he switched for US or France or anything. They would blame the government for not giving that much money for chess that they give for soccer.

But Romania... a lot of people are pissed because of this.

Feels good to be a Rapportbro, real proud of him. Forcing the queen exchange was very clever and this draw is almost like a win.

Who isn't better than agad? Dude analyses nothing and explains nothing, he just runs through the moves while saying his preset phrases. Levy was ok until realized hammed up zoomer reactions would get him more viewers.
