As much as I hate to admit it now that they're working in AEW but Grizzled Young Vets are arguably the best, and almost more perfect tag team of your specified time period. If they knew how to use a microphone to get themselves over they would be in the all-time great conversation.
A year ago I would have disagreed with you, but we can all see what FTR is like today without any titles to carry around. They are in fact directionless. "I do this for my family" is hardly a gimmick. When someone like KO does it, he combines it with a wry sense of humor and multiple face-heel turns as he charts the direction that will give him the most success.
FTR cuts smark promos about being THE BEST, but when they aren't wrestling for titles, they look like JAGs in the ring. They're just 2 guys doing moves to 2 other guys until 15 or so minutes have passed and it's time to end the match. Dax is smart enough to recognize that perception of FTR which is why he's started lashing out on Twitter and making sperg comments. They have nothing else to do at this point other than stirring up controversy.
FTR have never been more irrelevant in AEW than they are right now.
