Which sport? What are you nervous about specifically?

Have you considered the fact that you’re a gay until you show up?

Imagine only having one short life to live and then not doing the things you want to do because you’re too afraid to talk to new people who you’ll probably end up friends with.

Do conditioning work at home if you're feeling anxious. Running, skipping, bodyweight exercises, lift rocks, do that shit until you want to vomit daily. At some point you will be so fed up of it you will be gagging to get to a martial arts class instead and when you do you will be better conditioned.

This isn't a bad idea. When lockdown first happened my BJJ place closed down and I had to settle for a bunch of calisthenics and park jogging. I was so fricking done by month 2 and couldn't wait to get back to the gym.

Ditto. That's how I know it works as a method to get past gym/dojo/martial arts school anxiety. Especially if you go hard. It just becomes miserable after a while and you can't wait to get to class/training.

What are you afraid of? That what you already suspect deep down (You're a spergy loser with no skills) turns out to be true?
Of course you suck. If you could already do it, you wouldn't need to train.

ive been 'waiting' for the day i could build up the confidence to walk into a place for pretty much my whole life, always been planning my eventual entry into martial arts. and now they are saying that because i have high myopia i should not ever do martial arts of any kind. kind of at a loss. i might try and do it anyways. but it makes walking in that first time that much harder

what? why can't you train just because you're shortsighted

apparently having extreme shortsightedness makes you many many times more likely to have retinal detachment from a blow to the head

I've heard of that. A guy I did judo with back in the day had to stop because his doctor didn't like the rapid changes in velocity from being thrown. You could maybe do a weapon art like fencing or kendo? Fencing especially doesn't involve getting walloped.

You could also do something like bjj and only flow roll. You’re unlikely to take a strong blow to the head. Hell, even with something like boxing you don’t HAVE to spar unless you want to.

yeah. plan is, im gonna be joining a place that does kickboxing and bjj and mma, because its basically the only place here, and probing to see how things will work for me if i either dont do any sparring at all, or hopefully get comfortable enough in knowing that in a light sparring only thing that it will be upheld. and then bjj should be okay. the best i can hope for i guess. spent my whole life trying to wipe away my extreme weakness when i was a teen, and succeeded, and now they tell me im weak and vulnerable no matter what i do. ill probably become a gun autist who never leaves the house. joy. living in the city taught me to be afraid of other people

ah i see, i'm shortsighted myself and didn't realise what it's like to have extreme shortsightedness. I'm guessing you're really set on training MMA or some form of striking but I really think you should give bjj a go. bjj sparring, especially if you do it in the gi, is much more methodical and "slow", that it's hard to accidentally hit someone in the head unless the sparring intensity is like 100%. no gi is much more dynamic and you probably get hit in the head accidenatlly.

yeah, youre right. maybe i need to watch a lot of bjj propaganda. maybe i can trick myself into getting really interested in it. threshold for high myopeia is a diopter of -4, i have -7 in both eyes so prolly not good eh
