I suppose if you wanted to push an AEW originals/young stars turning on AEW angle then sure. Let Tanahashi win the belt and ask him to sell how beaten up he is and only let him defend against former wwe guys until Punk wins it back.
But making AEW the villain, which it is in reality, is a horrible idea and is just wwe booking. But that's what Tony has been doing all year so sure.

Its not up to Tony , the only way NJPW could agree to do it would be an full time exchange with an AEW top star for the duration of the thing .

Okada, Naito, Jay, Ibushi (I guess technically still), Shingo, and Ospreay are the current top guys. ZSJ is on the cusp, he's an upper midcarder they can rotate in. Other guys like that would include Cobb, O-Khan, SANADA, EVIL.

            Anonymous

Disagreed on O-Khan. He's still pretty far from top guy status.

He's main evented a decently sized show, that puts him in upper midcarder territory.

I say pull the trigger on MJF instead. The guy is white hot right now, and the story almost writes itself. MJF wins the interm belt, had a "summer of Max" or something that maybe sounds better, holds it until Punk comes back. Punk will be a natural babyface (coming back from injury almost always makes for easy babyface reactions). Then the blow off can be whatever.

      Anonymous

That's nice and all, but MJF vs Tanahashi is absolutely not main event worthy for Forbidden Door.

      Anonymous

MJF should be punished for burying the company

      Anonymous

Nah, they need to build his situation up and having him just appear on Dynamite before Forbidden Door would be seen as pretty lousy booking. Get someone else in there.

  11. 2 years ago
    Anonymous

Not every week, but once a month or so. Have a couple of big matches to build the next guy trying to bring it home, and let Punk be the one to need to do it. If they want MJF vs Punk with babyface Punk, him finally getting the belt back after another company had it is a solid way to build it.

You act like "Oh no, another company has won our top belt, who is going to get it back?" is a story that requires the other guy to be out there cutting promos. It's more on the guys trying to win it to cut the promos.

Cause New Japan is nearly as focused on promos. They have one promo on average, at the end of each show, and the other promos are all backstage that can just be subtitled cause it's not in real time anyways.

There will always be a way too high percentage of mutts that aren't gonna read subtitles in movies, let alone wrestling shows.

AEW fans are pseudo smarks, they may not have ever seen a Tanahashi match but they googled him months ago when the forbidden door shit was pushed. They will cheer and clap for NJPW talent without fail. AEW isn’t trying to get the middle American dumb as a brick mark that only knows Roman and Lesnar.

            Anonymous

The troony pseudo smarkness evaporates pretty much instantly. There's a big initial pop that is meant as "WE RECOGNIZE THIS GUY!!! HOLY SHIT, WHAT IS HE DOING IN THE AEW ZONE!!!" but they don't recognize anything that's happening in the actual matches and don't react to it. During Ishii's match, they were chanting Adam Cole meme chants while being silently confused by Ishii's apparently too high IQ to comprehend "I choppa you" spots. Same thing happened with Jay White.

It might be different in Forbidden Door, because I imagine (or rather, hope) the people that immediately bought the Forbidden Door tickets actually know some of their shit, but that's 100% not gonna hold on TV shows.

            Anonymous

That’s exactly my point. They’re pseudo smarks, they don’t actually know what they’re seeing in the ring but they know the NJPW names and will cheer them dutifully. They are terrified of being found out as dumb ignorant fans, so they will cheer and fantasy book talent all day long.

wtf are you talking about, AEW exists because Kenny was on a hot streak in NJPW

Yeah pretty much. A money mark convinced a guy on a hot streak and his indyriffic friends to help found a fed stateside but the most vocal fans of Omega and crew weren’t NjPW fans… they were jilted ex-wwe fans, just like most of the more obnoxious Impact, ROH, PWG, etc. fans. They barely care about their own product, they just want to beat wwe.

I was so happy to see them get tired of NJPW and follow Omega out. They were insufferable, almost as bad as the marks that refuse to see Naito lose. The Forbidden Door is one-way, only AEW fans want it.

I believe that, and hopefully this is a one time thing as I don't want to see any matches between these people that are utterly heatless time wasters

Well, but the point being that Tanahashi, if given the belt, would flounder because the crowds wouldn't react to him at all pretty quick. The pseudo smark shit lasts nothing. So, yeah, AEW should be worrying about fame.

Doesn’t matter if the fans tire of Tanahashi they’ll still watch the shows. They sat through that abysmal Page reign, they’ll sit through anything. Just as WWE has their diehard loyalists, so to does AEW.

            >The Forbidden Door is one-way, only AEW fans want it.

Delusional, the Japanese fans that are particularly interested are incredibly excited.

            A minority of fans sure.

Matt's wife is the chief marketing officer for the company. Kenny's run in Japan impressed Jericho and in his own words. “This whole new world of creativity opened up and this whole new star power for Chris Jericho, and we drew a lot of money for New Japan at that Dome show. And that was how the road to AEW started,” Cody's role was as a minor logistics guy at best.

This is just the buck getting his wife on the payroll like every other buck friend. She does nothing but bleed money like Brandi. Bucks identified a money mark, Cody actually wanted to build a company.

AEW is a money mark’s plaything, his little sandbox where he pretends he’s running a real fed. NJPW are an actual wrestling fed with legacy and pedigree. When the owner of your fake fed worships a real fed the fans default to the same mindset.
