hopefully this will mean the end of odefaart eventually. still think we need a left sided attacking midfielder too. Should probably just bin one of ESR/odefaart at this point (ESR my preference)

That'll be Tielemans probably. Remember with EL and WC there's a lot of need for depth. I'd rather rely on good players instead of Elneny and Lokonga again.

They don't exist anymore. Kane, Haaland, Lewa and maybe Benzema are the only ones left who are truly elite. You could take a chance on Scamacca, Schick, Isak or Jovic but it's a gamble.

If they get Jesus I'm assuming they want to do a false nine deal and get Saka and Martinelli to bang them in. Arteta better teach them to score or we'll never get anywhere.

Pep and Klopp decides the meta and they're both going into next season with a proper centre forward, the false 9 meme will die very soon.

Just had a gander at some video footage of the lad. He's a left-footed AM who tends to occupy the right half space a lot like Odegaard. Makes me think we're still going for another left-sided player who's more of a #8. Edu and Artets going for DEPTH.

      Anonymous

Makes so much sense. Depth is the biggest reason they missed out on top 4. When starting-caliber players were on the pitch, they were winning pretty convincingly for the most part.

Exactly this. It's good to see them learning their lesson. I imagine Tielemans is still on, and I don't think Xhaka will be sold either.

  28. 2 years ago

Tielemans is probably still on but it's likely that this transfer will impact the raphinha one. Can't see it happening now especially considering we still have to spend 40-50m on jesus, 25-30m on tielemans, 15-20m on hickey/zinchenko and that backup keeper.

Vieira is left-footed too, which makes me think the odds of going for Zinchenko is going down.

          Anonymous

Sadly yeah. Although Vieira is probably going to be better than Zinchenko, and who knows how the Ukraine shit will affect his mental state. If he were happy at left back I'd still get him but he wants to play midfield if he moves, which is fair enough tbh

Zinchenko would be a huge upgrade on Xhaka as that LCM who covers left back spaces. Zinchenko is technically superior to a player like Tielemans.

          Anonymous

I think we'll still go for a left-sided midfield player. Vieira is more of a natural from the right like Odegaard whereas Zinchenko is an out-and-out left-sider.

            Anonymous

That'll be Tielemans though. Unless Xhaka leaves or Tielemans doesn't happen, I can't see Zinchenko signing.

Yeah, I think we go for Zinchenko if we can't get Tielemans done, which is a shame because he has so much versatility. Not a fan of our season falling apart every time Tierney gets injured.

From a Sporting fan: Fantastic signing by Arsenal! He was the top assist maker last season and has a wand of a left foot. He is a playmaker that also can play our wide similarly to Bernardo Silva actually. He was brilliant at the youth levels for Portugal and was fantastic at Porto. Great crosser, great passer and good at set pieces.

With Arsenals playstyle I believe he will fit in brilliantly!

  45. 2 years ago

      Anonymous

We will get someone like Tielemans to play on the left side of the CM area to replace Xhaka imo. Like Tielemans or Zinchenko IDEALLY.

My biggest concern is actually the striker position. Still no one.

      Anonymous

Romano and others are staying the Tielemans deal is still on

        Anonymous

I wouldn't say that. Watching videos of the lad, I don't see Arteta playing him next to Odegaard in front of a single pivot. He's a naturally right-sided player like Ozil/Odegaard - we still very much need a left 8 other than Xhaka for the other side. He'll probably rotate with Saka and Odegaard as a right-sided AM or right winger.

There's 5 midfielders already at the club (Partey, Odegaard, Elneny, Lokonga, Xhaka), plus two feels like too many.

If Tielemans is coming in then somebody's going. Maybe Pepe but then there's not enough goal threat in the side.

          Anonymous

If Tielemans comes in then surely Xhaka's gone

When does his contract end? Could loan out Lokonga until Xhaka clears off.

          Anonymous

          >Doing it this way round might be the only way to get all our top targets in.
That's a good thought - maybe securing the signing of a strong attacking mid like Vieira will encourage a Tielemans or Zinchenko type to play on the other side.

Like [...] indicates in our LCM role we have Xhaka and Lokonga as our depth.

I genuinely don't know what role Partey has under Arsenal. Sometimes he's been a more advanced passing number 8, sometimes playing the 6. More recently Xhaka has been the left sided 8 and Partey the 6.

So the question is this: Will we sign a true DM or more of a left sided 8 to replace Xhaka?

Again, is Partey better as the 6 or an 8. Or is he better in a double pivot

I think we either sell Xhaka or loan out Lokonga. The fact that they gave Elneny a new deal suggests they have a plan in place to move one of those guys on.

            Anonymous

            >I think we either sell Xhaka or loan out Lokonga.
Right, so that means for sure the next midfielder we sign will be more of an 8 than a 6.

So our depth in the DM role is Partey, and then Elneny?

Wonder who'll get their breakthrough season. Think Azeez is a DM isn't he? Maybe we'll finally see White there now that we have Saliba?

            >Playing Ben White as a DM
Lmao what. I don't think Ben White is quick enough to play in the midfield. I'm sure Saliba will be benching Gabriel though and playing along White eventually

Think he played there for Leeds?

            Anonymous

Ben White made 42 of his 46 league appearances for the Leeds when they won the championship as a CB, but Bielsa used him as a midfielder in the other four matches, as well as in many training sessions.

So White has played DM before but not very often and idk how it would translate under Sharteta's system.

Would be interesting to see it tried out though if Saliba is ready to boss up the back line.

Ultimately Partey is our best DM right now and idk if he's even a natural 6

Still not addressing a more important part of the pitch....the LCM area that Xhaka occupies. We NEED a more defensive minded player who can either cover for Partey or play along with him in deeper areas of the midfield.

      Anonymous

I wouldn't get too angsty. The Tielemans/Zinchenko links suggest the club has a list of targets for that side of the pitch too. This signing pushes Pepe out of the picture, not a left-sided 8.

        Anonymous

I wasn't suggesting that signing a Viera type players means we won't sign a left sided CM.

More so just saying that it's more important that we get an immediate starting LCM than finding depth for Ode/Saka's position.

          Anonymous

Ah, I understand what you meant now. You might be right but there's also a lot we don't know about what's going on behind the scenes. Doing it this way round might be the only way to get all our top targets in. Or maybe it's like you say; maybe they've got their priorities in the wrong order.

            Anonymous

            >Doing it this way round might be the only way to get all our top targets in.
That's a good thought - maybe securing the signing of a strong attacking mid like Vieira will encourage a Tielemans or Zinchenko type to play on the other side.

            Like

            [...]
There's 5 midfielders already at the club (Partey, Odegaard, Elneny, Lokonga, Xhaka), plus two feels like too many.

If Tielemans is coming in then somebody's going. Maybe Pepe but then there's not enough goal threat in the side.

indicates in our LCM role we have Xhaka and Lokonga as our depth.

Friendly reminder that Xhaka is still the best performing midfielder at the club. He will continue to start every game until his contract runs out and you will still claim he is not good enough.

Yes Partey is a better footballer when he plays well but his 1 great performance every 5 games doesn't make him better then Xhaka's decent to good performances 9 out of 10 games.

Who the frick is going to be our striker. An actual truly tested 9 like Osmihen is way out of the question and budget.

A signing like Jesus would be weird because Gabriel Jesus is literally a LW/RW naturally, not a true finisher

        Anonymous

We're in the weakest era for strikers. There are like 6/7 strikers in the entire sport who're good enough to get more than 15 goals from the middle in the PL. Guys like Osimhen and Isak would get eaten alive here. They're not worth half the money their clubs will demand for them.

While its true that an elite >15 goals / season striker is rare these days, getting a good finisher in his mid 20s isn't THAT difficult.

Not for over 30m. Nelson and AMN would collectively get us max 20m. Torreira would be max 25m and bellerin would barely be 10m.

Osmihen is way too good for Arsenal and way too expensive.

He was bought for 26m pounds I'm pretty sure. The most >we'd get is about 15-18m at this point. I think 15m is what was asked of Fiorentina.
        >Nelson and AMN would collectively get us max 20m
That seems overvalued as well. Unless it's Everton buying them. I can see 15m for the both of them and that's being generous. For reference Chambers went to Villa for like 6-8m I think.

We're unironically better off getting Toney or DCL. You're probably the type of person that hyped up Pepe before he came here. We don't have a big enough budget to take risks on these types of players. We need to make a shrewd, sensible signings and fill out the squad with more quality.

Raphinha can play on either wing and Viera is a central attacker

          Anonymous

Raphinha played more on the right iirc, plus Saka can also Shift to LW. ESR gets some depth and maybe Martinelli will get a try as the striker.

It just gives the club more options going into games, instead of going for the same position due to lack of depth.

I don't see it that way, Vieira doesn't seem like he'll occupy the same positions as Saka (I think at this point he's squad depth and support for Odegaard) and Raphinha is a pretty different profile of player with a very different and far more aggressive style. Also, Saka had a good season last year on the right side of attack but that doesn't mean he'll necessarily play there for his whole career or even for the whole of next season, personally I see him eventually becoming more of an 8.

If we're talking sounds alone then I'd disagree, Portuguese has way more phonemes and vowel sounds than Spanish. The phrase structure is similar, I'll give you that, but the same can be said of basically any two Latin languages.
You probably just didn't care enough or didn't have a reason to pay attention to it to spot the differences.

Zinchenko would be a better signing than Tielemans.
Tielemans is just not as technical nor can he defend as well as Zinch. Zinchenko would also activate the frick out of our left flank, since it would give Tierney or whoever is our LB the the ability to bomb forward more, which consequently allows Martinelli/our LW to get into more dangerous central spaces.

Sick of these meme tactics. Tielemans is an out-and-out number 8. Zinchenko is a fullback. Stick to using players in their actual position. Because when it goes wrong for this club it goes horribly wrong.

Shartey has gotten better at playing a lone 6 but your lineup is trouble. You want at least one of your 8s to be defensively responsible both for security and to get Partey to carry the ball forward.

No. We tried the two offensive midfielders last season and it always failed. Xhaka-Partey as the midfield is the best we have and our most functional part last season. Defence and attack were inconsistent but the midfield mostly won their battle.

This just shows you what a chequebook fraud Arteta is, he needs top players in every position just to finish top 4. I bet the excuses will be "b-but he signed 6 players, they need another season to gel!" when he inevitably finishes outside the top 4 again.

I know very little about Martinez so I can't comment. Hickey I thought was going elsewhere

        Anonymous

Zinchenko is a versatile player. Arteta also has a hardon for Pep tactics/players. I wouldn't mind him if we can get him for a good deal if City want to unload him.
Martínez rumors just popping up today as far as I know and they sound promising, Ajax fans rate him extremely highly, can also play a range of positions but I don't see the point of getting him if we have 3 stellar centre-backs already unless we plan to play him DM/LB.
Hickey was one that a week or so ago people were claiming was basically a done deal but now there's barely a mention about him so I guess it was all a smokescreen, shame because he would have basically been a better Tavares to cover Tierney/Tomi when they inevitably get injured.

          Anonymous

Really not convinced Zinchenko. And that Martinez guy's even shorter than me. The Premier League is not the place for a short CB. Creativity and more clinical finishers are needed. Maybe'd take Hickey as either back up or eventual replacement of Tierney.

None of the top teams rely exclusively on playing balls up and in to aerial threats. Most high level football is played on the ground and quick reactions and pace are just as important for a modern defender as their ability in the air. I'm also pretty sure he's got a decent record aerially considering his height.
We should be beating the teams that do rely on target men as their only strength comfortably enough. The main weakness to worry about would be set plays but unless I'm remembering wrong we had the best record defensively from corners/free-kicks.

Yeah we should worry about Haaland's aerial strength when he's got lightning pace, scores 90% of his goals with his feet, is surrounded by players with 0 height and is coming into a system that it has been stated he will have to come to terms with. City aren't going to start becoming cross-merchants just because he joins.
Pretty much all the same applies to Liverpool too.

My god, the cope is REAL.

            >None of the top teams rely exclusively on playing balls up and in to aerial threats
            The TOP TEAMS you say?
How about the 14 non-top teams? You know, the ones that love playing aerial ball set pieces all game? Did you forget you still have to play 28 games against them? Did it slip your little brain that having a midget CB could prove to be a big problem in all those games?

            >We should be beating the teams that do rely on target men as their only strength comfortably enough
            But you don't! Haha.

Yeah we should worry about Haaland's aerial strength when he's got lightning pace, scores 90% of his goals with his feet, is surrounded by players with 0 height and is coming into a system that it has been stated he will have to come to terms with. Even more cope, holy moly.
You don't think a player like Haaland would RELISH the chance to aerially dominate a midget CB?

            Anonymous

Yeah, Haaland would dominate Martinez if they met in real life.

What's that? They did and Ajax kept Dortmund and Haaland from scoring while winning comfortably? And Martinez personally controlled Haaland (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7Jjfzy_r2Q)?

Surely now you'll concede that height isn't everything for a CB, right (especially when we have other large, commanding CBs)? Given that you're arguing in good faith and all.

Feels like a left-sided Tomiyasu kind of player, shame about his height though.

So who are we getting out of Zinchenko/Martínez/Hickey?

Think who we get all depends if on the outgoings, we still need to get rid of AMN, Mari, Torreira and Bellerin, as well as figure out if loaning Tavares is even part of the plan.
I wonder what they plan on doing with Cedric as well. Weren't we looking into a swap deal involving Mari and Nahuel Moline from Udinese? Think that's the only RB we've been linked with.

          Anonymous

          Nahuel Molina*
I guess there's that Brooke Northon-Cuffy or whatever the frick nig that did well on loan too.

          Anonymous

Yeah as far as outgoings are concerned there's a lot that are real uncertainties as to whether we can unload them or not. Cédric will probably stay, similar to Elneny in the sense that he's not 1st team quality but we need players like them because of how disasterous our fitness has been.
Tavares, Maitland-Niles, Nelson and all the players you mentioned are ones we should be looking to offload but it's such a pain in the ass with them all either having nobody interested, or the only people interested being cheapskates. Pepe/Leno are two others that have been linked with a move away and if we can get decent money for either it should be done.
I did hear about the Molina swap deal but that's gotta be a load of nonsense. I don't see why in the world Udinese would want a washed up centre-back if it took them losing a high quality young right-back. Also don't see us needing Molina unless both Cédric and Maitland-Niles go but who the frick wants them.

            Anonymous

Oh, for some reason I thought Cedric's contract was about to run out. But yeah, RB isn't a priority right now I guess.

            >Martinez. Is the back up
From what I've heard he sounds like a great player, but that's what makes this seem a bit of a waste. What's the point of spending a hefty transfer fee on a player who should logically be getting a decent amount of minutes if we're only going to bench him and use him as backup. Hickey/Zinchenko seem more like "backup" type players and could be gotten for 1/2 or 1/3 of the price.

If we loan Tavares and Tierney's injury record stays the same I reckon he'll get his fair share of minutes at LB, is he's ok with that.
But I agree, Hickey is coming from a non-CL/smaller club plus he's really young too and Zinchenko is used to being a squad player. They fit the bill better.

          Anonymous

          >I know it's a >yt highlight reel but this Martinez guy looks tidy.
Every defender looks tidy based on their highlight reel.

He will still struggle as a CB in the EPL because so many teams depend on set pieces for goals, especially against top 6 teams.
This is another case of Arteta refusing to compromise on his "methods"; refusing to recognize that parts of his meme philosophy are not compatible with the Premier League.

            Anonymous

            >refusing to recognize that parts of his meme philosophy are not compatible with the Premier League.
nta but Arteta is literally a Pep copycat in every sense of the word. He coaches, sets up and transfers in exactly the same was Pep does to a detriment at times so to say his "philosophy" is not compatible with the prem is just straight up wrong.
It's just that he's trying to apply Pep/Cities philosophy to a club with a fraction of the finances and nowhere near the same quality of players.
It's not a "philosophy" problem, more just that he needs to try his own thing rather than try to imitate his mentor forever more.

            Anonymous

He does try his own thing...and it's for the worse. Pep only micromanages up until the final third where he lets his forwards the freedom to do whatever. Arteta on the other hand wants to micromanage everything, this is why we struggle to score goals.

            Anonymous

You're missing a very obvious point here: the whole reason Guardiola has had success in the Premier League at all is because City have unlimited money to spend. If Guardiola was in charge of Arsenal, you would almost certainly be struggling the exact same way you are now.
Hell, if City didn't have De Bruyne, Guardiola probably would've been sacked years ago. That guy single handedly drives so much of their attacking play, and every time he's gotten injured, City play like dogshit.

The point is, your club isn't even remotely comparable to Man City. Arteta is a dud coach, his philosophy does not work in the premier league. Packing the squad with youth also doesn't work, something you should've learned 10 years ago under Wenger.

Arsenal's biggest problem by far was very clear to see after losing to Newcastle in the second last game of the season. What have you done to address that? Pick up a Portuguese attacking midfielder kid? Planning to sign a 175cm CB? You're going nowhere, sorry mate.

            Anonymous

It depends on where he spends most his time. If he mostly plays LB when Tierney is crocked, he will be fine. If he plays more then a couple games at CB against relegation shitters he will probably get caught out and look like shit. He's proven he's ok in Europe.

Martinez. Is the back up, more defensive option for LB/LCM and plays LCB. Takes Mari's, Nuno's, and Xhaka's roles. If one or 2 don't get shifted this window not as big of an issue as would be with Hickey and Zinchencko.

I think that the club should be spending big amounts on "backups" because the expectation should be that they should actually be landing good minutes this season and helping land the club in top 4. Need to aim for a squad where we won't have to talk about Cedric's and such.
