Tielemans is probably still on but it's likely that this transfer will impact the raphinha one. Can't see it happening now especially considering we still have to spend 40-50m on jesus, 25-30m on tielemans, 15-20m on hickey/zinchenko and that backup keeper.

Zinchenko would be a huge upgrade on Xhaka as that LCM who covers left back spaces. Zinchenko is technically superior to a player like Tielemans.
I think we'll still go for a left-sided midfield player. Vieira is more of a natural from the right like Odegaard whereas Zinchenko is an out-and-out left-sider.

From a Sporting fan: Fantastic signing by Arsenal! He was the top assist maker last season and has a wand of a left foot. He is a playmaker that also can play our wide similarly to Bernardo Silva actually. He was brilliant at the youth levels for Portugal and was fantastic at Porto. Great crosser, great passer and good at set pieces.
With Arsenals playstyle I believe he will fit in brilliantly!

Ben White made 42 of his 46 league appearances for the Leeds when they won the championship as a CB, but Bielsa used him as a midfielder in the other four matches, as well as in many training sessions.
So White has played DM before but not very often and idk how it would translate under Sharteta's system.

I don't see it that way, Vieira doesn't seem like he'll occupy the same positions as Saka (I think at this point he's squad depth and support for Odegaard) and Raphinha is a pretty different profile of player with a very different and far more aggressive style. Also, Saka had a good season last year on the right side of attack but that doesn't mean he'll necessarily play there for his whole career or even for the whole of next season, personally I see him eventually becoming more of an 8.

If we're talking sounds alone then I'd disagree, Portuguese has way more phonemes and vowel sounds than Spanish. The phrase structure is similar, I'll give you that, but the same can be said of basically any two Latin languages.

Tielemans is just not as technical nor can he defend as well as Zinch. Zinchenko would also activate the frick out of our left flank, since it would give Tierney or whoever is our LB the the ability to bomb forward more, which consequently allows Martinelli/our LW to get into more dangerous central spaces.
Sick of these meme tactics. Tielemans is an out-and-out number 8. Zinchenko is a fullback. Stick to using players in their actual position. Because when it goes wrong for this club it goes horribly wrong.
Shartey has gotten better at playing a lone 6 but your lineup is trouble. You want at least one of your 8s to be defensively responsible both for security and to get Partey to carry the ball forward.
No. We tried the two offensive midfielders last season and it always failed. Xhaka-Partey as the midfield is the best we have and our most functional part last season. Defence and attack were inconsistent but the midfield mostly won their battle.

Hickey was one that a week or so ago people were claiming was basically a done deal but now there's barely a mention about him so I guess it was all a smokescreen, shame because he would have basically been a better Tavares to cover Tierney/Tomi when they inevitably get injured.
Really not convinced Zinchenko. And that Martinez guy's even shorter than me. The Premier League is not the place for a short CB. Creativity and more clinical finishers are needed. Maybe'd take Hickey as either back up or eventual replacement of Tierney.

None of the top teams rely exclusively on playing balls up and in to aerial threats. Most high level football is played on the ground and quick reactions and pace are just as important for a modern defender as their ability in the air. I'm also pretty sure he's got a decent record aerially considering his height.
We should be beating the teams that do rely on target men as their only strength comfortably enough. The main weakness to worry about would be set plays but unless I'm remembering wrong we had the best record defensively from corners/free-kicks.

Yeah as far as outgoings are concerned there's a lot that are real uncertainties as to whether we can unload them or not. Cédric will probably stay, similar to Elneny in the sense that he's not 1st team quality but we need players like them because of how disasterous our fitness has been.
Tavares, Maitland-Niles, Nelson and all the players you mentioned are ones we should be looking to offload but it's such a pain in the ass with them all either having nobody interested, or the only people interested being cheapskates. Pepe/Leno are two others that have been linked with a move away and if we can get decent money for either it should be done.
I did hear about the Molina swap deal but that's gotta be a load of nonsense. I don't see why in the world Udinese would want a washed up centre-back if it took them losing a high quality young right-back. Also don't see us needing Molina unless both Cédric and Maitland-Niles go but who the frick wants them.

nta but Arteta is literally a Pep copycat in every sense of the word. He coaches, sets up and transfers in exactly the same was Pep does to a detriment at times so to say his "philosophy" is not compatible with the prem is just straight up wrong.

Hell, if City didn't have De Bruyne, Guardiola probably would've been sacked years ago. That guy single handedly drives so much of their attacking play, and every time he's gotten injured, City play like dogshit.
The point is, your club isn't even remotely comparable to Man City. Arteta is a dud coach, his philosophy does not work in the premier league. Packing the squad with youth also doesn't work, something you should've learned 10 years ago under Wenger.

It depends on where he spends most his time. If he mostly plays LB when Tierney is crocked, he will be fine. If he plays more then a couple games at CB against relegation shitters he will probably get caught out and look like shit. He's proven he's ok in Europe.
Martinez. Is the back up, more defensive option for LB/LCM and plays LCB. Takes Mari's, Nuno's, and Xhaka's roles. If one or 2 don't get shifted this window not as big of an issue as would be with Hickey and Zinchencko.

I think that the club should be spending big amounts on "backups" because the expectation should be that they should actually be landing good minutes this season and helping land the club in top 4. Need to aim for a squad where we won't have to talk about Cedric's and such.

From a Sporting fan: Fantastic signing by Arsenal! He was the top assist maker last season and has a wand of a left foot. He is a playmaker that also can play our wide similarly to Bernardo Silva actually. He was brilliant at the youth levels for Portugal and was fantastic at Porto. Great crosser, great passer and good at set pieces.
With Arsenals playstyle I believe he will fit in brilliantly!

So the question is this: Will we sign a true DM or more of a left sided 8 to replace Xhaka?
Again, is Partey better as the 6 or an 8. Or is he better in a double pivot

I don't see it that way, Vieira doesn't seem like he'll occupy the same positions as Saka (I think at this point he's squad depth and support for Odegaard) and Raphinha is a pretty different profile of player with a very different and far more aggressive style. Also, Saka had a good season last year on the right side of attack but that doesn't mean he'll necessarily play there for his whole career or even for the whole of next season, personally I see him eventually becoming more of an 8.

No. We tried the two offensive midfielders last season and it always failed. Xhaka-Partey as the midfield is the best we have and our most functional part last season. Defence and attack were inconsistent but the midfield mostly won their battle.

Zinchenko is a versatile player. Arteta also has a hardon for Pep tactics/players. I wouldn't mind him if we can get him for a good deal if City want to unload him.
Martínez rumors just popping up today as far as I know and they sound promising, Ajax fans rate him extremely highly, can also play a range of positions but I don't see the point of getting him if we have 3 stellar centre-backs already unless we plan to play him DM/LB.
Hickey was one that a week or so ago people were claiming was basically a done deal but now there's barely a mention about him so I guess it was all a smokescreen, shame because he would have basically been a better Tavares to cover Tierney/Tomi when they inevitably get injured.
Really not convinced Zinchenko. And that Martinez guy's even shorter than me. The Premier League is not the place for a short CB. Creativity and more clinical finishers are needed. Maybe'd take Hickey as either back up or eventual replacement of Tierney.
None of the top teams rely exclusively on playing balls up and in to aerial threats. Most high level football is played on the ground and quick reactions and pace are just as important for a modern defender as their ability in the air. I'm also pretty sure he's got a decent record aerially considering his height.
We should be beating the teams that do rely on target men as their only strength comfortably enough. The main weakness to worry about would be set plays but unless I'm remembering wrong we had the best record defensively from corners/free-kicks.

Yeah we should worry about Haaland's aerial strength when he's got lightning pace, scores 90% of his goals with his feet, is surrounded by players with 0 height and is coming into a system that it has been stated he will have to come to terms with. City aren't going to start becoming cross-merchants just because he joins.

Yeah as far as outgoings are concerned there's a lot that are real uncertainties as to whether we can unload them or not. Cédric will probably stay, similar to Elneny in the sense that he's not 1st team quality but we need players like them because of how disasterous our fitness has been.
Tavares, Maitland-Niles, Nelson and all the players you mentioned are ones we should be looking to offload but it's such a pain in the ass with them all either having nobody interested, or the only people interested being cheapskates. Pepe/Leno are two others that have been linked with a move away and if we can get decent money for either it should be done.
I did hear about the Molina swap deal but that's gotta be a load of nonsense. I don't see why in the world Udinese would want a washed up centre-back if it took them losing a high quality young right-back. Also don't see us needing Molina unless both Cédric and Maitland-Niles go but who the frick wants them.
Oh, for some reason I thought Cedric's contract was about to run out. But yeah, RB isn't a priority right now I guess.
If we loan Tavares and Tierney's injury record stays the same I reckon he'll get his fair share of minutes at LB, is he's ok with that.

Every defender looks tidy based on their highlight reel.
He will still struggle as a CB in the EPL because so many teams depend on set pieces for goals, especially against top 6 teams.

Hell, if City didn't have De Bruyne, Guardiola probably would've been sacked years ago. That guy single handedly drives so much of their attacking play, and every time he's gotten injured, City play like dogshit.

The point is Arteta is a rubbish coach, and he refuses to accept he's ever wrong. You're in no man's land, and you're going to stay there until he's gone.
It depends on where he spends most his time. If he mostly plays LB when Tierney is crocked, he will be fine. If he plays more then a couple games at CB against relegation shitters he will probably get caught out and look like shit. He's proven he's ok in Europe.
Martinez. Is the back up, more defensive option for LB/LCM and plays LCB. Takes Mari's, Nuno's, and Xhaka's roles. If one or 2 don't get shifted this window not as big of an issue as would be with Hickey and Zinchencko.

From what I've heard he sounds like a great player, but that's what makes this seem a bit of a waste. What's the point of spending a hefty transfer fee on a player who should logically be getting a decent amount of minutes if we're only going to bench him and use him as backup. Hickey/Zinchenko seem more like "backup" type players and could be gotten for 1/2 or 1/3 of the price.
I think that the club should be spending big amounts on "backups" because the expectation should be that they should actually be landing good minutes this season and helping land the club in top 4. Need to aim for a squad where we won't have to talk about Cedric's and such.
