It's a carney attraction that came from back alley carnivals meant to attract the dredges of society and poor saps. The particulars have evolved away from the big tent, but the idea is the same. Wrestlers are trying to make as much money as humanly possible, and the people who consume the product, ie wrestling fans, are by and large some of the most disgusting, putrid, examples of human beings society could produce. No human being could possibly sustain being near them for any extended period of time, much less get fondled by them without naturally recoiling in discomfort.
