The overall quality of football in europe has drastically declined. Watch some matches from 2000-2010 and see how much better strikers and defenders were. Also more technical. 90's was way more physical than today. Strikers like Salah and Mane would be nothing special 10-20 years ago. Today the game is maybe a little bit faster but thats literally it. It's really not. Sure, we had more great players in that team but the balance of the squad was all off.
To this day, it's quite tricky to work out how best to use that squad because we had a dearth of quality in certain areas (wingers) and a glut elsewhere (attacking players in central areas).
We also lacked adequate back-ups in certain positions like fullback.
That team might have had a better quality of player but it's much easier to make a better team out of the current squad.
Our current team still has several areas that are woeful in quality, particularly our mid-field which is easily overrun every time we face high quality opposition
