My coworker told me about his encounter with Jon Jones

>See's me watching MMA clips at work
>him: "So, I saw Jon Jones before my flight"
>me: "Oh shit, really? when was this?"
>"This was in 2013, but he was a nobody then"
>"wtf? Jon Jones was a household name by 2013"
>"Nah, I'm pretty sure he was a nobody"
>"Bro, he won the title at 21 from Shogun Rua and was probably 5th or 6th title defense by the time you saw him"
>"Then why the frick was he flying coach?"
Honestly its a damn shame these guys aren't living like superstars. You fight to the death in a steel cage for an electricians salary.

UFC is undergoing what is about to be a colossal legal battle over this, which if they lose, they'll owe fighters a ton of money in backpay.
The really good fighters like Jones are still multi millionaires, but the randoms that are stuck fighting in prelims, or don't have a number < 10 next to their name don't make much. They'll fight one or two times a year for $25k-50k at most even on massive PPV cards. For a long time, people were making more money at ONE than they were at UFC.

Demetrious Johnson whose legit probably one of the most insane fighters MMA has ever seen said he was making more money over at ONE than he ever did while champ in the UFC which is....lol.

Its usually not talked about much in the UFC because anyone that has spoken out has gotten squashed. The most recent person that has brought it up is Sean Omalley, who said the pay is garbage compared to other promotions and other combat sports, but its best to just leverage the platform to push merch.

Here Dana talks about money for fighters at 2:19 and 7:52

I'm aware, but hes blatantly lied and contradicted himself on the topic numerous times, which is why there is a massive suit that was ruled on and allowed to go through, so I don't really trust anything Dana has to say on the matter.

They estimate that if the case is successful, Dana is going to lose 2-3 billion USD.

How will this affect the ufc?

Not that anon, but going forward the UFC will change it's contracts so they don't get roped into another huge lawsuit like this. You can bet their legal team is working on that now.
That will probably mean more restrictions for fighters.

            What
            Cool

It may have started that way, but a lot of fighters are earning way more at other organizations. Francis Ngannou could potentially be just the tip of the iceberg, if there's legit money elsewhere the UFC can't confidently say they have the best fighers. It's a shame people like GSP got contract fricked though.

Imagine how many talented fighters left the sport to work in sub-jobs that pay better than the initial fights, if they had a better pay from the beginning they would be able to survive in the fight and bring us more entertainment.

The problem with boxing is not the money, it is the form of auctions that do not allow fighters without big managers to gain prominence, and these bigwigs only promote those who will bring the most financial return.

In the UFC, that's what happened with Jacaré, he was left out of the title fight until he was too old to win.

            ok

Yeah they get paid like shit

Personally I think it's better for the sport if the fighters stay hungry and live fight to fight. Once boxers reach certain paydays, they can afford to duck fights that might be a challenge and demand more and more ludicrous purses to step into the ring against the bums they are willing to fight.
I don't watch UFC but I think the fact that all the fighters have to fall in line, fight who they get told to, and take the purses they agreed to take when they got into the sport to begin with is far better than the sorry state of professional boxing.
If a fighter is spending their time driving their versace speedboat around rather than training to fight the hardest men on earth for food, it's just not the same.

      Spoken from The Dana Gospel.
The truth is can afford to pay his fighters more but the sad truth too is anyone unranked or below 10 on the ranking it worth a shit and wouldn’t be a draw to the company to even justify paying big bucks.
I do get however that these fighters need to be paid more. Otherwise they end up stretching out the joke that is YouTube boxing in order to make more cash. Seems perverse not to pay them more so they don’t consider taking part, Dana cries enough about Jake Paul too

The best system would be your payment only covers the training camp/expenses, you have to win to get the prize, with a set amount depending on rank.

I could see this greatly reducing the talent pool. Fighters hate this condescending carrot on a stick approach. They do win bonuses already which are unpopular but the ufc is still the best game in town. If you remove all prize money besides expenses the PFL is gonna get way more popular. Only young morons will be willing to sign this contract. Might be entertaining, but it would relegate the ufc to a redneck promo. Street beefs level of talent.

It's about prestige and purse size. If a win in my organisation is worth 5x a fight (win/lose) in yours, and mine is marketed as winner-takes-all REAL FIGHTING (maybe cut one or two restrictions UFC has to push the actual real fighting angle) I think it'd do alright.
But yeah when alternative options are given to the fighters maybe it's best to throw some money at them early on to keep them around until the contracts are nice and locked down.

Yeah but no one buys that bullshit anymore. Speculation is constantly swirling about the UFC rankings & the mysterious judges panel that no one knows shit about. Lot of folks already see UFC as just boring WWE tier shit. I made the switch to PFL the season point system makes way more fricking sense than whatever moronic fricking marketing bullshit sets cards for UFC.

Problem is, PFL has no fricking idea how to pace and event so you get a fight then have to wait a half an hour until the next one. UFC keeps things moving well on their broadcasts.

Again, I don't watch UFC, I don't know about the factors that may or may not be contributing to its drop in popularity, I just know too much money in excess turns fighting men into something else, which, from a spectator's point of view, is negative.

You know you can pay them enough so that they can't afford a Bugatti but can still afford to pay for their camp, trainers, etc, right? Don't you?
You also know that having a win bonus is basically withholding half of a potentially promised salary, right? Yes?

        Anonymous

They can't afford the camps in UFC? Like I said I don't follow it but I'm just getting tired of seeing the best get rich and stop caring. Sure, it's better for them but speaking purely about the quality of their events, it's not good.

          Anonymous

The UFC generally does not sponsor any camps for any fighters. Largely, the camps are made up of trainers and other pro fighters from that fighter's gym.
I'm not suggesting every UFC fighter get Floyd Mayweather money but they also don't need to get 5k to show either.

          >having a win bonus is withholding potentially promised salary
I'm not the leader of their fricking workers union, I'm a spectator wanting to see people compete. I'm not promising anyone any salary, by "you win, you get more money" seems like an obvious improvement to any sport.

The problem is that the "win" bonus is basically what the decent salary would be. If you lose half of that is gone, having maybe 3-4 months of work for 25k is much less worth it than for 50k. And not all of that money goes to the fighters.
The UFC also does Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night bonuses on each card. Those should be considered the only bonuses and no more of this win/lose bullshit. And even then, those bonuses used to be 75-100k and now they're just 50k. UFC have become cheap frickheads ever since the Reebok deal. Won't let the fighters have their own sponsors but puke out sponsors all over the fricking Octagon.
Keep the POTN/FOTN as the only bonuses and award the most exciting and skilled fighters while paying others decently.

If UFC paid more then a lot more talented people would be giving it their all to join and a lot of the bigger names would be less likely to leave in the first place. The overall quality of competition would rise significantly.
