If that's the case, why would he consistently give Ospreay such high ratings? Like his match against Danielson, there wasn't really anything surprising in terms of how the match was laid out, and certainly nothing surprising about the winner.

Cody vs AJ is nowhere in the ballpark of Danielson vs Ospreay. If Danielson vs Ospreay is a 10/10 then Cody vs AJ is 8/10. Its good but not that good.
I watched both.
Ospreay vs Danielson was executed poorly on many levels, it was a match anointed as great before it happened. Danielson's slow, Ospreay's a full-on slop wrestler now who works matches for plebs who want flash over substance and don't care for the actual artistry of pro wrestling. It was 32 minutes of two guys going through paint-by-numbers motions without much mind for making the sequences look well-performed.
Cody vs AJ was a good main event that exceeded expectations a bit. Not stellar but good.

I think Dickbutt is in on the agenda to kill non-WWE wrestling. There's video of a lecture he gave to a wrestling class from 2005 or so. He said in it that moves are cool and fun to do but character work should be the priority, because no one cares about moves unless they care about your character personally. He has a clue about why people like wrestling in the first place, so it's more than a little suspicious that he never takes his own advice.
Danielson probably just wants to spend the last leg of his career having fun fricking around in a moneymark promotion where anything goes no matter how dimeless it is because it isn't even trying to be a real business.
