The Australia vs Iran Playoff in 1997 will always be worse
      >Aussies lead 2-0 at home after 70 minutes (3-1 on aggregates)
      >Some frickwit invades the pitch and tears down the Iran net
      >Play has to stop so that the net can be fixed
      >Aussies lose all the momentum they had until that point

      >Indirectly leads to the bankruptcy of our FA and the collapse of the old National Soccer League

Finland's worst moment in football is from the same year. It's the extra-time of the last qualification group game and Finland leads against Hungary 1-0. Had Finland won we would've gone on to the play-off for the World Cup spot. Hungary gets a corner kick and Finland scores an own goal with the last three touches made by Finnish players.

That's just the World Cup list. The Euros list just adds to the pain.

People like Sven, McLaren and Capello gave blood on their hands. They held the nation's beating heart in their visibly indifferent hands and threw it in the bin. Soufgate's a shit tactician but at least he gives a toss.

Anders Svensson hitting the post in golden goal against in the round of 16 against Senegal 2002.

We would've gone to a semi final against Brazil. Because it was the >turks in the quarter

Not to be a Eriksson defence force but you can't say he didn't do well with you.
He went out to eventual winners Brazil, you had the lead. That the players made mistakes.
2004 and 2006 well, penalties against a good Portugal? That's the players he can't take the penalties. And Rooney in 2004 getting injured while being the best in the tournament or Rooney in 2006 losing his cool.

Sven did consistently qualify for tournaments, and once there, we always got out of the group. By England standards that is remarkable consistency

            >we were just unlucky to lose on penalties
With the players available, a better manager would've won at least one of those quarter finals in normal time, rather than crumbling at the first sign of pressure. His decision to play Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard, Rooney and Owen all at once, all players who operate in the same central attacking area, is genuinely baffling for a top level manager.

            Anonymous

            >genuinely baffling for a top level manager
This board constantly shits on Soufgate for not stacking his team with all the available attackers.
But Sven was a coward. He was happy to lose with the fan favourites rather than run the risk of getting blamed for a bad result if he replacing Slippy/Fat Frank with, presumably, Nicky Butt or Hargreaves playing the workhorse role. Surely he should have used McManaman more, homie was starting for Galactico era Madrid, but Kieran Dyer and Trevor Sinclair went to Japan instead

          >The money has started to come in for France to retain the World Cup and the holders are now 3-1 with Ladbrokes. Anyone who has not yet had an outright bet on the tournament should contemplate a saver on Roger Lemerre's squad, currently a top-priced 4-1 with Coral. Two years ago we suggested backing Italy each way at 10-1 after they finished runners-up to France in Euro 2000. The bookies are paying only half-the-odds a place on the first two but the draw has been kind to them. Italy have able strikers led by Christian Vieri and an inspirational play-maker in Francesco Totti. Argentina, 5-1 with Blue Square, have been easy in the market, reflecting concerns that the country's domestic troubles may affect the team. They were comfortably the best South American team in qualifying

          so #3 favorite

          the usual i would say

Most Irish I’ve seen somehow support his stance on that. Boggles the mind. Had he stayed Ireland had a real chance of going far. The Robbie Keane goal against Germany was amazing, but going out on penalties to Spain was terrible. Roy could have made the difference if he wasn’t like a spoilt child throwing the toys out of the pram.

His complaints about the lack of preparation and poor conditions of the training facilities were probably quite legitimate, to be fair. It doesn't excuse him having a strop and going home IMO, but it seems to have with some.

        Anonymous

It was McCarthy who sent him home. I think the way it goes was that Mick was having a go at him in front of the entire squad after he went to the press about the dire training facilities (rightly so) and even accused him of faking injury, to that roy blew up and called him a c**t and a wanker. After that it he was dismissed. All of it could've have been completely avoided if the fai weren't laughably incompetent when it came to the preparation, but what can you do

Blatant foul on Van Hooijdonk in the extra time of the 1998 semi final vs Brazil. He would have took the penal himself and guaranteed a final versus France, which we could habe shat the bed against 3-0 too.
