He may not be as smart as he thinks he is, but he's still smarter than he looks.

      a. integrity as he really does seem to be enjoying his work at the Austrian NT
      b. Bayern openly communicated that he was the third choice
      c. Uli Hoeneß is moronic and openly shits on their current manager
      d. coaches tend to be fired for little to no reason at Bayern whenever the lockeroom cancer players Müller, Goretzka and Neuer don’t feel valued enough

      he looks very smart tho

what has he done to earn the total control of a major club?

revolutionised German footy and single-handedly built Hoffenheim and Leipzig

        >c. Uli Hoeneß is moronic and openly shits on their current manager
Why is his opinion even relevant anymore? Why does Bayern tolerate this old sack of manure strutting around the facility voicing his concerns about every single element?
He's like that demented history teacher at my old school who was still "employed" at 80 years old because his family was dead and everyone was sorry for him, so they kept him around with such important tasks as bringing in the mail and greeting the students.

        Rangnick rejecting Bayern.
Rangnick was pretty succesful everywhere he went except Manchester United (so chances are, Manu being Manu isn't an unimportant factor here). He isn't exactly a great fit for Bayern, but in Germany he is decently well respected still (despite his reputation of being a control freak). So Bayern going for him is weird but to some degree understandable with the current market.
However, him outright rejecting Bayern because he'd rather keep his job as some alpine NT coach is a slap in the face for Munich, who see themselves as the biggest club in the world. It's like the loser from some stupid American romcom rejecting the prom queen.

how long can he coast off (not that impressive) achievements from 10-15 years ago? he not only failed at Man United but handled himself terribly

          Anonymous

he's 65, the Austria job is the last thing he'll do before retirement. He's just enjoying a low-stress job in an environment where he's super respected and gets to coach players that went through academies that he himself built as head of footie at Red Bull.

Ralf is /comfy/ as frick, and the Bayern job would have been the exact opposite of that.

Is it true that Austria is a really good team now?

            Anonymous

It's not bad, but the squad has too many obvious holes in it (striker, offensive midfield, wingers, fullbacks, keeper, Alaba ded) to make a deep run at a tournament. Rangnick is extracting everything out of his players, but considering how difficult the euro group is, they could play three excellent matches and still not make it out of the group.

            Anonymous

The only smart answer here. Most people go into retirement at his age, and working for Bayern would have been extremely stressfull. Meanwhile doing the gig here has everyone loving him even if we loose in the first round because we drew the fricking french and dutch, so no one would blame him. Then maybe worldcup qualification or not.
Sure Bayern would have paid more, but its not like hes poor. The frick do you do with a few million more at that age? Especially if you exchange them for what time you have left.

His results were admittedly appalling, but United fans still have quite a positive impression of Ralf overall because he exposed all of the main issues at the club (most of which still remain) under the Glazers. I don't think it's fair to say he failed when he was here for just six months, without a summer transfer window

he will never not be rated here. and he isn’t the first person to fail at United. that whole club is incredibly toxic

Bayern is the ultimate stage for drama, we call them FC Hollywood for a reason. The squad is in need of a major overhaul for various reasons (lacking depth and overall quality, old key players approaching retirement), the pressure to perform on the national and international stage is huge, there are divas in the locker room and especially in the leadership, as Uli Hoeneß is famous for always opening his mouth and attacking whoever he thinks is at fault. It's just a very unpleasant place to work at right now, and Rangnick wasn't treated with a lot of respect in the coming weeks ("He is out third choice, but I think he will accept anyway"). Things are going well for him as manager of Austria, why would he leave that for such a wasp nest?

The worst thing will be replacing Neuer. Nobody is talking about this right now but I can see him getting injured for a long time again and decling in general next year.
Nobody can replace him at the same level. This was Bayern's best buy of the past 20 years.
