Punk needs to be the bad guy. Would allow his geriatric body to perform less intensive moves as he slows matches down to his speed. Would let him, hopefully, cut promos that aren't just "wah my old job sucked, but I love Bret Hart."
I fully expect them to just both be and stay faces because "this is awesome chants" and in AEW everyone just thinks about themself rather than the bigger picture.

Punk as the heel is obvious, and also the right choice, but where do you go from there? He has no chemistry or build with anyone but former WWE guys.
Punk carrying himself as a Cena power level threat makes no sense in AEW because there are no other Cena level threats in AEW, besides the champ. So he should go to commentary and work on getting to know the talents, and do his best to steal Perfect's gimmick of salty commentator while there.
All Friends Wrestling, so neither one is heel.
