Basketball participation is still #1 among adults, most gyms and community centers have basketball leagues 5 to 7 nights a week, plus all day pickup on weekends and you can find pickup games outdoors at parks on weekends with good weather
Golf and tennis are outdoor weekend activities for the uppermiddle class and wealthy

you might see some adults playing catch at the cookout but there are no organized leagues

I think the reason is that it is way too expensive to play with full equipment. You can play some variations like flag football for less, but with the helmet and all is something that can really only be organized by inter-schools tournaments.

Vast majority of American football is inter-school competition.

That's the roots of the sport (first game ever was Harvard vs McGill), and that's the situation today. Especially with there being a pushback against playing the sport before the age of 14.

But also, a lot of parents don't want their kids to play American Football.

Flag football and "two hand touch" are commonly played casually, however.

Yes. American colleges were playing a soccer-like sport, but adopted Rugby from Canada in the 1870's.

yes Canadians invented most American sports, truly a Superior race

Kind of. Rugby was adopted from Canada, but the sport was really invented in the 1880's in the USA with major rule changes lead by Walter Camp. Canada then adopted many of those rules in their code.

The 1880's rule changes significantly separated American Football into a different sport, however.
Some changes in that period include:
            1. Line of scrimmage
            2. System of downs (then 3 downs to get 5 yards)
            3. Uncontested snap (as opposed to scrum)
            4. Legalization of interference/blocking

These 4 things are still some of the main differences in the sports, along with the forward pass which was introduced later on in American Football

I'm talking about sports back in the day. In England every school had its own rules, i think In American it was every college because it was not codified. I think it was similar with baseball, every town played it in its own way.

            Anonymous

The colleges had it codified early on since it was intercollegiate play. It was first codified in 1873, though as more of a soccer variant than Rugby. Then switched to Rugby a few years later, when they (Princeton, Harvard, Yale, and Columbia) agreed to. Then, the sport was restricted to elite private schools in the northeast.

Then in early 1880's they codified it in a very complex and thorough way and the sport became nationalized under those rules, with universities throughout the country fielding teams.
