In the US leagues except the NFL, there are ~100 games for the regular season, which is basically completely useless and nothing but a qualifier for the playoffs, which lasts 16 to 28 games depending how quickly you get to four wins per round. I'm sure FIFA was inspired by this, but only later on. Their first instinct was merely "We need more games, because more games means more money. And we need more teams, because having the US, China, and India at every World Cup would also mean more money". They knew 64 participants would be too much (for now), so they went for 48. At first, they had this even more moronic approach of 16 groups of 3, with no ties possible. But then they realized that going 12x4 means even more games - and therefore even more money. The "price" for that is the flawed 48 -> 32 reduction, and everyone knows that third-placed teams advancing based on cross-group comparisons is stupid. But that's not what FIFA cares about
I am 100% sure they briefly pondered about a 64-team World Cup where there are group games, but everyone advances to the knockout stage, winner of group A playing last of group B and so on. That would be 160 games, I think. I suppose the only thing stopping them from doing it right away was the already bloated season schedule, and maybe the outrage they'd have had to deal with

you live in a country where the only nationally followed sport and really only nationally followed entertainment option has a 17 game schedule lol

Black person everyone in the US thinks the NBA, NHL, and MLB play too many games. Frick most people think the NFL expanding to 16 was too many. For non contact sports the Soccer people have it right, 1 home, 1 away, that's your season, play everyone twice. If you want to still have a tournament after that? Fine. But who the frick actually watches 160 games of baseball? Or 80 games of basketball?

yeah you gotta go slow when you do blatant cash grabs. it also makes opponents look too hysteric for drawing a line in the sand at any point as well. it's the most important strategy when you want to get anything stupid done. if you're willing to do anything slowly the goycattle will take it though

This is true for US pro leagues, but not college leagues

2 generate money and interest. 1 is still football and the other operates on the same principle of fluff regular season where an individual game means jackshit

I bet if F1 and euro jogkick had our same slop playoff systems their growth here wouldn't be a thing

not really, college basketball regular season absolutely still matters. I feel like this opinion is only held by people who only check in during the NCAA tournament and is probably a 'fan' of Duke/Kansas/UNC/Kentucky where the making the tournament is expected.

For one, they only play 30 regular season games, 18-20 in conference. Second, rivalries actually matter. Third, winning the conference regular season is a goal itself, the entire point of the season isn't just to make the NCAA tournament.

The NCAA tournament is large, but it isn't the only thing that matters, and its representing a division with 357 teams.

College basketball is way more similar in organization to European soccer leagues than it is to NBA/MLB/NHL. NCAA tournament = Champions League. Conference regular season= league. Conference tournament = domestic cup

in terms of mattering to the conclusion of the book it is. the conference matters argument has some truth and I wish far more so but even that is kneecapped with conference tournaments. American sports have made themselves far too meaningless in a day where entertainment options are effortless. It blows my mind most people don't see that. Random football shit like the ufl is about as popular as an envelope of anthrax, the sport isn't why the NFL is #1

            > even that is kneecapped with conference tournaments
No it’s not. Conference regular season championship has higher prestige than conference tournament championship

I agree with you on MLB/NBA/NHL, but the point doesn’t hold up for college basketball. It has the appropriate number of games, and the mentality that only national championship matters simply doesn’t exist- largely due to the amount of teams being much higher. Vast majority of fan bases just want their team to have a solid regular season, make the tournament and then maybe advance a few rounds

            >It has the appropriate number of games,
yeah but the meme tournament makes it meaningless for the ultimate goal. the tournament should only be conference winners and since there's 32 it takes care of itself, but 11-9 shitters "deserve" a shot and in the process make games between better teams more meaningless so theirs still mean something. this only works so much because at the end of the day you know you're watching a ~.500 shitter spin it's wheels whether you are told they're "still alive" or not

            > yeah but the meme tournament makes it meaningless for the ultimate goal
But there’s more to the season than just the tournament. It’s not the only thing that matters, you have conference regular season championship, conference tournament, rivalry games

I'm mostly concerned about the level of exhaustion the players are at when they start the tournament and the endurance needed for all those extra matches. Some Carter's are gonna get ruined with this nonsense, do they not see just how over bloated the regular season already is?
