The fact that so many South American football critics still name Lionel "the greatest or most significant or most influential" footballer ever only tells you how far South American footballers are from becoming serious GOATs. European football critics have long recognized that the greatest football players of all times are Cruyff and Puskas, who were not the most winningest or richest or had the most instagram followers of their times, let alone of all times. North American soccer critics rank the highly controversial Mia Hamm over male players who were highly popular in pitches around Europe. Football critics are still blinded by commercial success: Messi sold more shirts than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore he must have been the greatest. European football critics grow up watching a lot of Brazilian football of the past, Argentinian football critics grow up watching a lot of Argentinian football of the past. Brazilian football critics are often ignorant of the football of the past, they barely know the most popular social media accounts. No wonder they will think that Messi did anything worth of being saved.
