I live in Dortmund, using the subway regularly and never had any really negative experiences. Even Berlin isn't all that bad. Frankfurt on the other hand is a complete shithole.
I've spent probably thousands of hours on public transport in the Ruhrgebiet and hundreds in Berlin. Never seen anything worse than some drunk, loud people.
Visited Frankfurt exactly once for one week. >Needles lying around on the streets making it dangerous too walk in sandals >Streets FILLED with homless people, I'm talking hundreds of them on a single street to the point where it's like a festival campsite. For me it's the same in Dortmund. I'd never dare to walk that area - placing the soccer museum towards the Nordstadt was not a good idea.
