Not sure, but I think they scraped the "UEL and Champions go into Pot 1" thing starting next year. Pots are kinda meaningless anyway since each team plays 2 teams from each pot - including their own.

I'm still in denial that UEFA changed the SOVL groups format into this mess tbh

No groups, 8 matches. It's gay.
9 club groups and you play everyone in your group once would be better. You should compete with the clubs you play against.

        Anonymous

better than the obsolete 4X8 group stage, but this was the best solution.
also no more draws for the knockout stage, so the bracket will finally be balanced instead of the moronic format that sent inter and bvb/psg to the final thanks to a "weak side" of the bracket

SOVL groups where every year you can accurately predict 14 of the 16 qualifiers.

24 club KO stage is bad though. Make it either 16 or 32.

The whole thing should be unseeded straight knockout, group stages are cancer.

How do you play 8 games then? You play 1 team in the other 3 pots twice, what are the other 2 games?

CL from next season on will basically be a league of 36 teams until the KO stage.

But unlike in national leagues, you will only play against 8 teams of those (2 from each of the 4 pots), 4 games at home, 4 away (but against 8 different teams, so no home and away legs)

The top 8 teams of the league table directly qualify to the Ro16, while the next 16 teams teams have to play another playoff round against each other for the Ro16 (losers go to the EL), while the bottom 12 teams are eliminated.

      The KO stage remains unchanged.

but will this affect the CL magic? One of the reasons CL is so desired to see is because it happens rarely, if it becomes normie tier... its prestige might get diluded.

288 (two hundred and eighty-eight) games of football, to reduce 36 teams to 24

        Anonymous

I like it. Group stages are almost always boring. By the time two 2 top teams face each other they are already qualified and their match is meaningless.
What I did't like is that they added 2 extra games for the first round. No point of that

        >losers go to the EL
        Not anymore

whys are there pots if there won't be any groups?

So you don't play 8 bad rivals or 8 good rivals

So there's no real difference for ending up 9th-24th?

Only that you close at home, and 9th-16th teams will face a weaker rival

          Anonymous

          >why do we still have pots?
to have somewhat mixed selections. Each team needs to play against two very strong teams, two strong teams, two middly teams, and two weak teams (based on the coefficient) instead of having a random selection. That's a valid method to reduce the number of games played in a league compared to a round robin method.

          >why do we still have cretins in charge of this?
you can't seriously complain about the holy UEFA? They can't do no wrong. Never.
Serious answer: It was a reaction to the Super League (and an opportunity to make more $$$ by increasing the number of teams).

        >You play 8 different teams once
        >instead of preparing your room temp IQ ball kickers for 6 matches against 3 opponents you'll now have to do crash courses for 8 matches against 8 opponents
That'll just make the overall level of football drop when teams have less time to analyse their opponents and no way to adapt to them in a second game.
Tactics will become less important and the teams that already can afford the players with the highest individual skills will have even more of an advantage.

yeah but that whole 'group replacement' stage is a fricking nonsense now from entire concept anyway. You basically need to be trying to pretty hard to get knocked out - even if you finish 25-36th (in a table of 48) after 8 fricking games already, you still got yet another shot at it.

            Anonymous

yeah and if you have 6 complete shitters who lose every game, and another 6 who win maybe 1 - you basically need a win (against the complete shitters) and a draw, this out of eight attempts, and you are still a contender. Its cashgrab meaningless fixture production

On the other hand it means that teams that can hire a billion "analysts" now have less of an advantage
