>Catalonia has it's own national team but isn't allowed to compete in FIFA

Heck, even with us we have Puerto Rico competing in FIFA. What did Catalonia do? Are they just that insufferable?

and that's a legitimate political arrangement. still not its own state.

        mate

again, not states, not even in a confederational sense

        >Catalonia has it's own national team but isn't allowed to compete in FIFA
they're not being singled out, plenty of other regions have their own national teams in spain that they field for special occasions/holidays/for the memes and don't compete in world cups either. they're part of spain so they play for the spanish team. pretty sure their passports would say spain on them

        also this

Why won't Spain just let them have an independence referendum, what are they scared of?

your """"constitution""", or lack thereof, allows this sort of referendum to happen and have binding effects. ours doesn't.

The reason is simple, no one in the world except the countries in the British Isles played football and if they wanted to play they could only play against each other. Because of this tradition, they do not play as one team.

but Puerto Rico is a part of FIFA, separate from the US. Does Puerto Rico get grandfathered in?

England, Scotland, and Wales have a grandfather clause. Puerto Rico is NOT a state so it doesn't count as part of the US.

I'm so sick of Catalonian nationalism. My grandad is from Barcelona and he and my dad are so proud of it, they can't even speak Spanish, just Catalonian. And they kept trying to teach me that shit when I was kid. Why would anyone want to learn a useless language when I could learn Spanish which would 1000x more useful in america, not to mention all the countries that speak Spanish I could travel to. I almost told my dad one night to frick off when there was a Barcelona game on I was so fed-up with him and grandpa trying to get me to watch.

    We've been through this

Bongs got grandfathered in cuz muh inventors of the game and muh first "international" match ENG v. SCO (the fact that neither is an independent nation-state and both are UK citizens who travel with UK passports is conveniently ignored).

Puerto Rico: A US territory/colony whose inhabitants are US citizens and travel with US passports. But their legal status is commonwealth and that's why they field teams for the olympics and other international tournaments. They joined CONCACAF and FIFA in 1964.

Unlike Puerto Rico, ENG and SCO are not territories/colonies of the UK.

Hong Kong is also a FIFA member, even though they're now part of the PRC. Palestine is also a FIFA member, even though they're about to cease to exist.

England, Scotland and Wales have had their own football team before FIFA even existed. But ultimately any "nation" can create it's own football team but it has to be accepted by it's fellow continental members to be recognised by FIFA and allowed to compete in official international fixtures. Even the Falklands have their own NT but Argetinians refuse to legitimise them so they can't join CONMEBOL.
